restoring hard carb boots

This one is new to me so i tried it with some old '72 carb boots.
Put about 50 ml (2 oz)of Oil of Wintergreen (available a pharmacies) into about 2 liters (2 quarts) of water and bring the water to just under a boil.
Drop the rubber boots in and let 'em cook for about 20 minutes. Try to use some kind of basket or something to keep the rubber off the bottom of the container.
Oh yes, and good ventilation as this stuff will make your place smell like a huge stick of gum!
Shazam!
Soft and pliable and easy to install. Works on hoses too.

Keith, have you tried this? If it works, it sounds like a great addition to the $50 mod thread. Thanks!

I've also tried this, had better results from a using the wintergreen oil in xylene instead of water.
Do you still boil it if you use xylene? ... That would probably be kind of dangerous.

Well I am giving it a try with a mixture of 30% wintergreen and 70% xylene and let it soak for 12 hours. I will post up what happened with pics!

You can skip the oil and soak in xylene - it helps leach decades of gasoline deposits. Cracks, though, don't go away.

SO I gave it a run with mixed results for the most part it works I was doing a tank to get the knee rubbers off I needed a right side knee rubber and the tank had both. The left side rubber came off and is in great shape and the right fell apart. So over all it works. I still need a tank knee rubber.
Ill post pics in the morning
