Rewired, fresh battery, solenoid clicks but no crank

Its a 1982 CB750 Nighthawk. I used the "bare bones" wiring diagram for a Honda dohc that's floating around this site and others. The bike did run before I tore it apart a year ago. I relocated all electrical components into a fake oil tank from tc bros. It should be noted that 4 gauge wire was used to extend connections from the starter to the solenoid and from the solenoid to the battery. Maybe a total of three feet between the two. The connection between the starter and solenoid could be shortened a few inches. Ground connections from battery and harness to the frame are good. Starter grounds to the engine. Brand new battery too. Just tried to fire it and its late now. Looking for advice on where to start troubleshooting. Thanks

Jump the solenoid posts with the metal bar of your choosing. For my personal entertainment, be sure it is non insulated, wet, and possibly being held by your teeth. Then, if that doesn't turn the starter, send power directly to the positive post on the starter. All the while knowing you have a good ground. Bike in neutral.

Report results, sounds are priority.

You either have a corroded solenoid or a wanky starter.

But, Report results. The wanky starter issue could be intermittent and possibly ignorable for a while.

Jumping solenoid posted resulting in sparks but to turn. Same with straight from battery to starter. Pulled the starter out and turned it by hand, it binds to the point where I had to use pliers to turn it. Reinstalled and ran it straight to the battery and it turned. Reinstalled starter gear and side cover and it started right up. Then it was hit and miss. Pulled starter and it turns freely by hand. Now I have nothing. Solenoid clicks by jumping posts. Starter straight to battery does nothing. Wanky starter it is. Off to ebay I go. Thanks for the help.

Rebuilding a starter is super easy just watch for your shims. If they sell a kit I'd rebuild it.

Tore it apart and layed it out on my bench. Looks like somebody torqued the hot post too hard and broke the connection on the inside. Bearing are good. Can it just be resoldered? I'll post picks when I get back home.

Can't hurt to try!

Well, I tried and failed. Resoldered it and snugged it up after reassembly and it broke again. This time a took a chunk of internal wire with it too. So my attempt to fix it failed AND it can't be rebuilt now. Are all DOHC starters the same? Cruising ebay and from the outside they do.
