rusty rims

Been Around the Block
Is this a problem? Photos are after I knocked it down with a wire wheel. I more or less want to see if anyone else has had this issue and what they did about it. I think if I go after it with some WD40 and a wire brush i can get the rest of it.

That rust is nothing. Put a wire brush on a drill, go around and clean it up (shouldn't take you more than 3 minutes), wipe it down with a rag, replace your rubber rim-strip, and mount a tire.

By the way, twice in the last week I've seen someone say to use WD40 when sanding or brushing a metal part. I have no idea why anyone would want to spray or pour that crap on anything they were trying to clean up. In fact I have no idea why anyone would even own a can ofWD40; the stuff has no good use on the face of this earth, it wasn't made to do anything other than to temporarly stop water (condensation) from entering spaces between parts of rockets on the launch pad. It is not a cleaner, it is not a lubricant, and it has zero beneficial uses on a motorcycle, a car, or in the home. WD40, a perfect waste of money. Oh, and don't even get me started on duct tape.

Blasphemer! WD-40 works like a charm to remove old built up grease. And duct tape (good duct tape that is) is.. is... well it can be handy too!
I actually used WD-40 and a rag to clean my bikes metal bits when I got it home the first time, worked nicely!

I have to agree, WD40 is very handy and has taken a lot of grime off my bike. I'm sure there are much better products for the job but for the moneys worth, it does well. Besides... from what I recall, it sure stops a lot of squeaking in doors. Same with Duct Tape (not the squeaking).

also takes sticker residue off like a charm.

In either case I just wanted to make sure the rust wasnt going to compromise the integrity of the rim. It was really built up in some spots but the wire wheel knocked it down a lot.

wd40 when sanding on chrome lubricates it so the swirl marks dont show and keeps you from building up to much friction heat causing your chrome to get ruined
