Rusty tank to rust free tank using vinegar

I just use some two cycle gas mix after the alcohol, close it up shake it around, then let it sit till I need it.

When its time to mount I just dump the gas out, mount it, fill with fresh gas, and go.

Only time I have ever lined a tank is if it had holes in it.

With the vinegar stage, I mixed in a 1 lb box of salt (1 per 2 gal vinegar). Kicks up the rust eating power by making it more acidic!

While the salt may indeed help clean the rust the PH of NaCl (Salt) is 7. Completely neutral. Salt is corrosive, so you basically (pun intended) have extra corrosion going on, but not extra acidity.

Thanks for the correction. I was following another persons tip, but not really double checking. I stand corrected. I'll have to dump the mix and start over. Now, that makes more sense that salt makes corrosion. I really feel dumb now that I grew up in Michigan. Doh!!

It's not like there's a test later. Acids are corrosive, alkali's are corrosive, salt, which is neither, is corrosive.

However, salt is electrically active. All corrosion is an electrical process. Salt acts like an electrolyte, despite not being acidic, and thats how corrosion occurs, the electrical currents erode the metals.

The problem I have is the gas fill neck lips down into the tank about 1/2" so you can't ever really pour out all the liquid and debris from the fill spout and the debris just clogs the petcock hole if try to drain it that way. Any tips?

Ive never tried "Evaporust" on big flaking chunky stuff. But when I have used it on rifle barrels. It pretty much dissolves that rust, down to nothing. pour a gallon "bout $20 bucks" in and roll tank around...for about 3-4 days. Dump it in a bucket. see what things look like and "strain out chunks" then right back in, another 3-4 days if need be. If the tank IS THAT BAD, it could dissolve holes through it. causing leaks.

Got a wet/dry shop vac?

Get a small 1/2 diameter vinyl hose at Home Depot, like 3 feet. Tape it to the vac nozzle.

Use vinegar. Then vacuum out the liuid and as much rusty debris.
Rinse with water...vac out.
Rinse again, vac out.

If still rusty, redo vinegar treatment (Rinse, repeat)

After last water rinse, rinse with denatured alcohol (Depot has it).

Should all drain out petcock hole.

Let stand in warm place (outside in sun is good too) till all alcohol evaporated.

Should be good to go...

I make and sell a mini vacuum in my powder coating business. It is basically a 2" pvc cap with a fitting in the end that secures a 1/2" hose and then a regular blow gun on the other end of the hose. You just turn on the shop vac and pop the cap over the end of the vac hose, when you pull the trigger on the blow gun you now have suction instead of blowing. We use them for sucking powder out of recessed letters and such. It should work for the purpose you mention if I took the blower off the end.

Whats up guys, im a newb, The 2 stroke oil wouldn't damage anything? Clog the fuel lines or gunk up the carbs? I'm going to have to do the tank cleaning process and this might be cheaper. Was looking into the whole metal rescue thing..but it's somewhat expensive, 25$ for a gallon, and I may need 2-3 gallons to do it the "right" way..

2 stroke oil after cleaning will prevent it from rusting if you're going to have it off the bike for an extended time.

Sounded like he was going to clean it with 2 stroke oil.....

rinse the vinegar with water, then rinse with alcohol. Dry thoroughly. A little 2 smoke oil residue won't hurt anything, but you may smoke a little till it clears out.
