Hi everyone,

I'm Ryan, newly minted DTT member from Toronto. I've been creeping around this forum doing a bit of research and finally took the plunge on a 1976 Honda CB550F. The bike seems to be in pretty good shape, but it hasn't run in a few years - and, yes, I know how that reads. The previous owner had about 6 bikes and was clearing out semi-abandoned projects to free up space and cash. I've got a Clymer and Honda shop manual so after I hook up the new battery and right hand switches (the old one was removed by the PO to address a starter button issue), I'll be going through the 3k checkup and we'll see what's what. Other than that, I only plan on swapping the front and rear fenders that the PO powder coated for another set of original chrome ones that I picked up from a wicked guy here in town, getting some new rubber, and crossing my fingers.

I love older machines (I've also got a 1965 Imperial - for those days when you just feel like punishing the ozone layer) and I'm looking forward to getting into this bike. I'm currently wrapping up the school year (I'm a grad student) so once all my papers are submitted, symposium presentations wrapped up, and my students' exams are graded, it'll be wrench time and hopefully soon there after, ride time.

Anyway, just wanted to do the proper intro thing and say I'm really looking forward to participating more actively in these forums once I have something worthwhile to contribute. There seems to be a great group here with some really varied experience and perspective, hope I can add something and repay all the great info I've already taken away.

That's the long and the short of it, hope to add more soon.

All the best,
Ryan.

Hey, welcome. I live in the Belleville area... so not quite neighbours but close enough.

May I ask what your area of research is?

Welcome! I'm in Winnipeg. I've got two '77 550F Super Sports. Let me know if you need any model-specific info or help. I know these bikes inside out and backwards, including electrical and engine issues. They're the most reliable bike you can imagine. I'm sure yours will be up and running with very little fuss.

Thanks! I'm doing a PhD in Musicology/Ethnomusicology. My interests are primarily considerations of style and genre and generic conventions in song writing and record production. It's not totally set in stone just yet, but my dissertation will likely be on the music of The Clash - sort of how they're considered punk, punk is considered amateurish and simple (musically), and yet The Clash from their very beginnings and throughout their recorded output drew from a diverse pool of influences, from rockabilly, reggae, early hip-hop, and, of course, straight up punk rock as we normally classify it. Sorry... I'm nerding out! I'll try to control myself.

Anyway, here's a pic of the bike. Not a fan of the yellow (as I mentioned, I already have replacement chrome fenders to install) but everything seems to be in really nice shape so I can deal with minor cosmetic changes as I go.

This yellow 550 is awesome.

Thanks, Mike. I'm pretty new to these old bikes so I'm sure I'll be leaning on good folks like you. I appreciate the offer and the encouragement.

HA! The previous owner of my bike had that picture up in his garage as his inspiration for this bike! It is nice, but it's just a bit loud for me. Although my teal '65 Imperial might argue that I'm not as subtle as I want to believe...

Welcome fellow Toronto DTT. New here too. Bike looks great. Once I get more experience riding I'll be looking to upgade to the 550F or 750F. I love the 4 into 1 bikes.

Cheers
