man i am all about doing stuff on the cheap, hell i still pull out screws from stuff before thowing it away... i am as cheap as they come... hell my friends call me MacGyver, cause if i dont have it it can be made... ha ha ha
The key is to have high RPM - polishing with a drill is only slightly faster than by hand... ;D
Bench grinders are cheap at harbor freight... and yard sales, and on craig's list... they're certainly worth it when you consider the time savings.
Thanks for the compliments on the wheels MSIMM43 -
I got the rubber mounted, and will be mocking up the bike for some tabs and measures over the next few days, I will post some pics of it as a roller... just so you get an idea of where it is headed.
This is a side view, the seat foam will be a bit flatter in the end - you can see the electrical box pics
From the other side with Toby a.k.a. rocketdog, a.k.a. superballbrain
Blingin' front wheel with the new rubber, which made it pop a bit.
and another from the front with the controversial apehangers... 17"... I like'em, and realize that others may not... More to come once I turn that Coca-cola / dunkin donuts template box into stainless! The headlight mount and front fork stabilizer will be done later this week - more pics to come...
dig the apes and wheels man, but try to get your ground level strait (bottom of the frame even with the ground) you can drop the tubes into the forks a bit, but you may need to put in shorter tubes... if not you will have that 70's style chop when guys could not weld and just put longer tubes on and called it a chopper... great start though man! with the back bone you have on that bike if you drop in the tubes and toss on a sporty tank to ride high on the back bone that would look great as well
Understood... I am not a fan of the 70's chop... Keep in mind the motor isn't in yet, and that will pull her down even...
The actual suspension hasn't changed a bit... the swingarm sits the same and the forks are also not modified - looking at the pic, it really does have that look, but it's because that motor weight, and visual line is not there... I won't be doing a King and Queen seat or a prism tank on it! Promise. ;D
Ok - so mostly I messed around with stuff like the guages and what not - probably avoidance behavior... I got a few things done though, and have a little ways to go before I am done with Mockup and will start on that greeezy motor...
I decided to mount my headlight, and started by cutting off the formerly keyed steering lock -
Then I was going to grind the mounting block to fit - it went really well, and man, that stuff melted like butter...or aluminum! !@#!% !!! Now I have to find something else to use as a mount...
This (below is the last minute fab mount... a piece of thick wall DOM filed to flat on the sides...
Centering was a pain...
Below are some shots of the electrical box that I fabbed out of some 20g. stainless - it is the outer shell - the bottom will sit on a lip and be tacked in place soon...the nasty tab will be cut off, there will be internal tabs supporting the box.
I'll show the finished box pics when done...
Next on tap - the blinkers, and the speedo mount, followed by rear fender / tailight mount... Happy New Year!
man that looks great! dig the headlight i like it kicked out a bit... is that an old dyna low rider lamp? looks good with all the chrome/polished glad to see someone out there still loves the bling! i do as well man check out my brothers old sporty we built... we polished and chromed EVERYTHING... then i added a white LED kit and used it as a show bike for us for a while... LOVE the bling! but the two tone like he has on his tank may look cool on this build as well man!
It's an aftermarket "bates style" like - ver close in size and shape to a Dyna light for sure - it is just a good size and shape for that old school chopper look... I am going for a retro look, and yes, I do love the bling... the more chrome the better - I prefer polished aluminum to chrome though because you can always fix it, and it doesn't have to be perfect to look good!
Busa - I am still lovin' the wheels - everytime I walk into my garage I think "damn, those were a lot of work, but they do look good!"
thanks for watching guys, this is an encouraging bunch on this site for sure!
Sam
I think I'm gonna have you tig it... it is just tacked in place at the moment, and I agree it does look better than the other mount I had planned on!
Probably bring that over with the engine covers when the time is right, and you can do it up right... My mig welding has improved, but only slightly! Still looks like chewed gum at times!
Thanks! Progress has been slow since the wheels went on, I am working on the rear fender mount, signal mounts, and finishing the electrical box. Should have some more pics soon.
The seat foam was the stock foam, and I trimmed it down quite a bit with a 3 inch razor blade that is typically used in a scraper... basically I took off the bulk in chunks and then shaved it smooth. It will also be wrapped in batting or a thin layer of gel before it is covered, so that will keep any imperfections from showing through the material.
Has your build been completedd? I am thinking of purchasing a CM 400 and I am seeking ideas as to what to do. I currently have a XS650 that I made into a cafe style bike but may change to a bobber and make the CM400 the cafe. Post pics if your ride is done. Like what you did to the wheels.
