Re: Savage Project: Steel Clover

Thanks guys! I'm kind of new to this metal work thing, so this has been and continues to be a learning experience. as for an update today, I shaped the bottom of the tail and am now awaiting my tail lights so that I can make the housings for them. Next I am making the pice that will go beneath the tail and tie back end together.

So the pics aren't that great, but I guess thats what you get with a phone. I'll get my camera out and take some once most of the metal fab is done.

Re: Savage Project: Steel Clover

So I have been thinking about possible locations for a license plate bracket, and everything I have come up with would ruin the design of the bike. Since I'm pretty sure it is illegal to mount them sideways here in PA my options are limited. I have more room on the left side because of the belt drive so I'm thinking that side of the bike would be the best option. I don't know, what have you guys done? suggestions?

Re: Savage Project: Steel Clover

update! finished forming the piece that goes under the tail and I must say, this is starting to look pretty sweet! I will probably spend the rest of today working out how the parts will all bolt together and welding tabs and BS like that. After all of this is done, I can finally move on the the tank and seat pan ;D . But before I can do anything else, A quick trip to the beer store is necessary.

Re: Savage Project: Steel Clover

WOW! totally cool. I wonder if you could tell me what gauge material your using and maybe a quick picture of your tools. I have puttered about shaping metal but am apprehensive about diving in like I need to. You have inspired me to push a little harder. Thank you.

Re: Savage Project: Steel Clover

Too cool, man. That rib on the underside, love it. How are you finishing it? Paint? Clear?

Re: Savage Project: Steel Clover

Thanks for all the positive feedback guys! It's really humbling to be amidst so many people with so much talent and to receive this kind of feedback is really an honor. I look at this as more of a sculpture that happens to have two wheels and an engine than a motorcycle, and I think it is that view that is allowing me to go this crazy with it. Hopefully, the tank is this weeks project. I have to say I am a bit nervous about getting those welds to be perfect and leak-free.

Yes, I have a pretty sick paint scheme cooked up for this one. All House of Kolor products as usual with lots of candy and pearl. there should be enough airbrush work to keep me busy for a couple days as well.

Here is a link to the tool set I'm using:

I am also using a teardrop dolly in conjunction with the slapper to smooth out those hammer dings. It seems to work pretty well and I will need to do minimal bodywork before painting. I think the steel I'm using is 20-22 ga. I don't know for sure as it was all just scrap lying around the shop. it is pretty easy to work with and and it is very sturdy once formed so I'm happy with it. I would say that if you are thinking
about it, just pick up a piece of scrap and hammer away! you'll be making bike parts before you know it!

On a side note, I ordered the tail lights and will be working them into the tail later this week...

Re: Savage Project: Steel Clover

got some handlebars in the mail yesterday. Only problem is that they weren't anodized. Well, I guess thats not really a problem, as it saved me from having to strip the anodizing off before did my own anno job on them

the green I am using on these parts is a perfect match for House of Kolor limetime green pearl (which will be the accent color used in my paint scheme). I have been holding off on buying parts for now because I am waiting on a deal to happen with a HD Fat Boy and that will take a good bit of $. But rest assured, this bike will be finished before the end of this riding season.

Re: Savage Project: Steel Clover

You will love the fat boy! great scoot man! bars look awesome! i know you do not need it but a good trick to remove Ano is to toss it in the dish washer! works awesome

Re: Savage Project: Steel Clover

interesting tip, it must be the lye in the detergent. I have an industrial ano stripper that works wonders though. glad to hear the Fat Boy will be good. It's a lot heavier than what I'm used to so I was a little leery, but for $2,500 I can't pass it up. I also just bought a 1970 Triumph Spitfire....I can't help myself.

Re: Savage Project: Steel Clover

HEY MAN!
I hope your project hasn't been totally sidelined; looks like it's been a long time since anyone's been here...
I cam across this thread because I'm working on my own SUZUKI SAVAGE VINTAGE ROADSTER. Not quite the same idea as what you've been doing at all, but I really admire your work so far.

CHEERS!

Savage Project: Steel Clover (Remember me?)

Hey Guys! so I have been absent for way too long on this site. I have had a lot of things happen over the last year and had to put this build on the back burner. A quick recap of events going back to when I last posted here: I bought a 1970 Triumph Spitfire and began a frame-off rotisserie restoration, I met the most amazing woman In the world, got engaged, bought a house, and I am finally getting settled to a point that I can start work on this project again very soon. So I have been busy to say the least. The bike still looks just like it did the last time I posted, so there really isn't an update at this point. I just need to set up my new garage and I can finally start tinkering again :D

Congratulations on the lady, house and Triumph in that order ;). I am happy to see you back. I have been a fan since you started and am anxious to see how the rest of this goes.

P.S.
I know this is your bike build but a quick flash of the Triumph would be cool.

Thanks steve, I will post one when I get them uploaded. In the meantime, I have been brainstorming a lot about this build lately. I want to make my own turn signals and I was wondering if anyone on here has any experience embedding LED's into resin. I want to mold them into the body and I have some really wild ideas of how to do it, but being as how the shapes will be so organic, It may prove difficult. hmmm...something to think about.
On a side note, my next project may be a Honda Rebel cafe build (not until this one is finished though).
