Scammed on Craigslist... I "know" the guy. What can I do?

So long story short...

I bought 3 bikes off of a dad and his two sons (age 30ish). The dad said he would get the title for the 1972 for me and the son texted me later that day saying he could get all 3 and would just go to the Secretary of State and get them. He "went" to the previous owner and told me that you said there's a lien of $800 on it and he had no money. I lent him $800 to pay off the lien so I could get the titles. We signed a contract that said he would pay me back etc. and I gave him cash in person. He then said they went to the Secretary of State and ordered the titles. A few days later he told me that the lady who they bought them off has another one and he got it from her to pay back the lien they (I) paid for. He asked if I wanted to buy it and I said okay but I was out of town and won't be back for a week. He said he needed the money ASAP because of rent/had to pay a bit as well to get that bike. I obliged even though everything seemed so wrong but I asked him for a lot of information in case he did scam me. I have his ID, social security number, birth certificate, address, etc. (presuming they are real). He told me the bike would be at his brothers house and to meet him there today when I got back. This past week I kept asking for pictures of the bike and titles but there was always excuse after excuse and the pictures wouldn't show up on my phone but he claimed he sent them. I went there and the brother had no idea what I was talking about and said he got in a fight with him last night and didn't know what was going on. I asked him for his dads phone number and called him and he said he was wondering where his son was getting the money from and that he would get my money back no matter what because he's going to make his son do right.

My question is what can I do here? I have all of his info, his name, address, wife's name, ID, and a "bill of sale" style contract for paying me back the $800 and all of his texts. Is there any hope?

Right now I'm not sure if the dad is for real or just playing along...

Well that blows.
I mean you have solid evidence for a civil case, but I would try your absolute hardest to avoid that.
Personally I'd show up at his house daily until I got my money back.

4. never 'lend' a stranger money unless you are willing to lose that amount. Also, who has a lien on a 1972 bike?

You can call the local sheriff and tell them the situation and say you don't feel comfortable going alone and they should send out an officer.
Personally unless the dude is scary on some way, I would just grab a friend and show up.

I have to agree with buckeye...lesson learned I guess. I guess the best thing to do is go to the police give the info you have on the guy and hope the info is legit. Good luck man!

How many thousands are we talking? How long has this been goin on?

Who has a lien on a 72 bike? Will a bank lend money for something that old?

How much money did you give this guy!? ??? Thousands!? I'm hoping the dude is legit for your sake...a lot of scams out there these days. I hope it doesn't have to go to court. What a pain in the dick that would be on top of everything else. Good luck chuck!

I have read the OP and am really confused. Are you in possession of any of the bikes or titles? Did you buy all of them sight unseen? Or did you buy one and the kid said he had access to others and that's where the deal went south? Clearly the bikes don't exist, correct?

Note to self, if it doesn't seem ligit, walk away. Only give money to a seller who has the bike and clear title in hand, unless of course you don't mind the risk of losing the cash if it truly was too good to be true.

Your gut told you it seemed fishy- always go with your gut.

Keep on the guy(s), let him know you aren't going away. Don't get violent or stupid, stay calm and level-headed.

I am still unsure of how many bikes and titles there are and where did the woman/ previous owner come from? Way too convoluted ...

I bought 3 bikes from his dad and then the son said he knew of others. That's when it went south. So I do have 3 bikes. Which is why it didn't seem odd at first

I have 3 bikes and paid him for 3 more. For all I know those don't exist. I have no titles for the 3 I have in my possession but the dad said he does have 1.

The lady comes into the story here: the lady is who they got the bikes off. They went back to her to get the titles because they didn't get them from her husband. He said she told them there is a lien and she won't pay it.

Gotcha. And you have the titles for those first three bikes?
I have none but supposedly there is 1. I will take the VINs to the sheriffs office tomorrow when I go, explain the story, and have them run the VIN

So you dealt with the dad, that deal was ligit, the son watched his dad get some cash so he contacted you on the sly and said he had access to other bikes. You figured it was ligit after dealing with the dad. I can see that . . .

Is the son in his 30s or the dad?
