So Ive seen a few people make seats out of the rear part of gastanks. I like this idea. So heres my plan: I can get beat up old tanks from the cycle bone yard for pretty cheep $20-40. Pick up 2 or 3 stock cb750k(dohc style) tanks and do some cutting. I plan to narrow it up a bit, but keep the lines so that it flows well with the rest of the bike. I have a harbor freight mig that will weld everything but, we dont have a set of torches. Do you guys thing i can form the seat pan with out them? Could a propane bottle torch heat up the steel enough to make forming it a bit easier? I dont have photoshop or i would take some pics and show my plan a bit more. Any advice on trying this? it would be my first attempt at anything of the sort so i plan on having a few back up tanks to practice with. This may be pre mature as i may be putting my project on hold for a whle with my work season starting back up, but i may try to at least get started.
Most likely custom. I want to ax the stock hinges and lock to norrow it up as much as possible. Pluss i like to make things as hard as i can... I may be able to get a stock seat pan for cheap as well though. as i said i have very little expirence with shaping metal like this. Ultimately i want to mount a speedcell bat in the tail section and tuck most of the wiring between the frame rails.
On my seat I orignally tried my hand at hammering a piece of sheet metal into a seat pan but wound up not liking the sharp angles of the thing so I wound up getting some 3/4" OD steel tubing and bending it up to match the top of the frame on my bike, welding it together and topping it with the sheet metal for a seat base. It also gave me a nice curved sided seat base to "wrap" the chopped gas tank end I'm using for the bum stop onto the seat frame and weld it on. Here's a pic of what I did.
It's much more narrow than the stock seat and the straight sheetmetal pan I tried to make first. Now my knees hug the side of the tank nicely. So much so in fact I'm considering adding some rubber knee dent pads.
Nice! thats very similar to what i had in my head. Using tubeing will be much easier and definetly quicker. Im expecting a check in the mail verry soon. May have to go buy some tubing and a tank or two and see what i can fab. up. Thanks much for the input!
