Sending to the painter--opinion wanted

ready to get the bodywork to the painter after the holidays.

Tell me what you think about flat/satin black

The bike is going to be a rider and not a showpiece. Im not concerned with shiny alumnum bits and schanzzy bling. I am worried that flat/satin black will make the bike look less finished and amateurly done though. If I were going with a flat/satin black, i would accent it with gloss black striping. The striping would mimic the striping on the 350F tank and be similar on the fiberglass seat and maybe a little detail on the side covers.

My other option is gun-metal, charcoal, or dark gray with black striping and a ton of clear.

Im getting to the final stages of this project and am anxious to ride. Anyone have an opinion? Ive never seen a flat paintjob i liked so im hestitant to try.

A pic of the bike if you are wondering

i think flat black with red and cream colored pinstripe work (like old hot rods) looks badass if you know a good pinstripe guy.

then i can slick my hair back, roll some ciggys in my sleeve, and call my bike Grease Lightning. Thanks for the feedback but im going more vintage racing than hot rod

****side note*** .......ive only put 2 posts up on this site and you are the only one to reply...to both posts to boot. thanks for being my bff---happy holidays

lol not a problem.....i think your idea could work really well if its done right. i like the idea of the charcoal color with black stripes, personally thought id rather see it all gloss only because flat paints tend to be a pain in the ass to take care of.

a few months back hotrod magazine did a kit car flat black with a wide gloss black stripe down the center and red pinstriping to separate the colors and it looked amazing even though it was a really simple paint scheme.

If you're looking for a nice gun metal/ charcoal color see if your painter has a color chip for dodge code DM, I've striped a couple dodges for a dealer with that color, it's just a really nice looking metallic (used it to two-tone my scion too!)

My bike was originally going to flat or satin black. I worried that it would look unfinished, plus I've been seeing tons of black bikes running around. I went with orange, which is pretty far from black, but I'm happy with it.
The rest of the bike is blacked out and dull... so it still has that zero bling thing.

Go beat up...

Wish I had better pics, but if i can get a cool look with no time or money, you could def get a pro to do a lot better....

Color opinions are almost as bad as oil discussions (i'll leave out the pod filter/airbox debate-it wins hands down). That said, there are a few general approaches to think about.

First is what has been mentioned which is gloss black accents on flat black. Given the shape of your tank, think think contrasting knee dents, with pinstriping or the like.

Another approach is use the frame as an accent. If it becomes a "design" element in your scheme, you can offset flat black rather nicely with anything from a 75% grey all the way to white. In addition, you can paint bits of the mechanicals with the frame color to add accent points.

The third approach is kind of a take on Alex's orange cheeto bike. Look to late 60's early 70's muscle car schemes. Bright colors in a gloss finish, but not necessarily candy and flat black striping. One of my personal all time fav's is a 68/69 camaro ss with a yellow paintjob and flat black racing stripe. I have even seen one where the stripe is offset (look to paintjobs on the 05-08 Ducati monsters for some nice offset striping themes too) which is killer. The stripe can continue all the way through the seat. Racey without the hot-rod aesthetic that you do not care for.

Digging deep into the annals of cafe history, there is also the gold/silverleaf (shiny paint) accent job. Spruces up flat or accents gloss black and meshes nicely with chrome, polished aluminum, brushed metal finishes, and/or metal paint hues.

thanks for the feedback guys.

I decided on dark charcoal with black stripes...all gloss. I decided against flat stripes because I don't want the flat and gloss finshes to visually separate from each other.

Simple, mean, with a hint of racing history. Pics will be posted when it is done.
