Sharkguy - first build

sharkguy

Doin' it my way!
Introducing myself and my build. My name is Eli Martinez, shark diver by trade and passionate about motorbikes since I can remember. Went to school to become a motorcycle mechanic. Did that and went on to work for a race engine builder for a few years then moved away from it all...now I dive with sharks for a living. (Long story). Fell in love with bikes again, hadn't ridden one or worked on one in over 17 years. Got the bug again, and fell in love with Cafe's at first sight. Working on my first build a 91 CB250. How I ended up with it, not sure, but she ended up calling to me, and now she's mine. Been restoring her for 6 months now, and she's almost done except for small odds and ends, and of course her engine is not done. Getting the top end ported/polished. Bigger carbs and slightly more exhaust so she can breath. Figure I have about two more months before she is ridable, then I am on to my next build which is a 75 Honda 550. Fell in love with bike building again...here is a couple of pics of my build. Looking forward to learning from this forum and chatting it up. Cheers.

here is what the bike currently looks like...curious about thoughts opinions, also considering no front fender, with 31 mm forks will that cause riding issues?

Welcome Eli. Paint and lines on the bike look great. Good luck and kick ass back story. Would love to hear about the shark diving some time!

Nice work so far. About your fender question: front forks need a brace to stiffen the legs and reduce twisting. A stock fender does that job up to a point and it also smooths air flow over the wheel. You may be able to buy a fork brace from Fast From The past. If not, keep the front fender. It can be shortened somewhat if you want

Thanks everyone. and yea the seat pad is not comfy, and not good for hours on the road. I will keep that in mind on the brace Teaser. see if they can match one up to my forks and tire size? Ditched the fender, weighs more than the engine. (almost) My training by my bike builder mentor, Kelly Roberts is less is more - light, strong, fast.

For those interested, I have kept a blog on this build since I started. I have not updated it in a couple of months due to my travel schedule, but here some can see the evolution of the creation of this bike and what it looked like when I started the project...

Less weight = lighter, but never stronger.
Less weight makes for faster acceleration
Less strength makes for slower cornering.

Hate to tell you teazer, but he cut weight by ditching the engine..... and that doesnt = faster acceleration

It was a CB250.................................

The real point is that ditching unwanted weight is good, but not all parts are unnecessary. Most of them serve a purpose - even it that isn't always obvious, and throwing them away isn't always an improvement in the real world. No point in feeling cool if your new engine just ingested dust or dog shit.

was a joke....

I figured that, but there's a school of thought that cutting everything off is good, so I thought I'd just remind them that Ain't necessarily so.............
