Hey guys, this is my first post. Been lurking for a few weeks. I have a 1978 Honda CB550k. Here's a picture: (just saw that the blinker is crooked...fixed)
Work in progress, but my question is how you guys remove the handlebar perches from the top triple. Something like this:
I'm thinking angle grinder and slowly work to a polish? Is this ok to do? Will it compromise the strength of the triple clamp at all? Or any other suggestions on how to make this area look nicer?
I clamped mine on a mill and fly cut them off. Welded in the pockets and fly cut again. Check my blood sweat and beers cb500 build for what it looked like.
Make one......we get our own design water jet cut, then polished. An engineer can add any threaded holes or counter boring required.....looks tricker than adapting the OEM in my opinion, well worth a few $.
6061 is cheap, any place should be able to water jet it, issue there is set up fees and your ability to provide accurate drawings. Is there a technical college nearby? Maybe they could do it as a project. Wouldn't take more than a few hours for a student.

It's really not complicated. A vernier guage and a ruler will do it. You just need to get the holes in the same relationship as the original, the rest of it can be any shape you like. We like to have the tidy look of all pinch bolts internal.....
For what it's worth it's easy to grind it flat just take a hack saw/sawzall/bandsaw to it to take the majority off an then clean it up with a grinder or a file followed by sand paper.

I DID see your post Duality, haha. I'm still undecided which route I want to go. Definitely it would be cheaper to grind it down, so I might start with that. In the next couple days or so. But in the relatively near future if I don't like the result I'll have one custom made.
Thanks dudes! My first post and you've given me the answers I need. More questions to come later on as this build progresses.
Ok, so I just went ahead and shaved them off today.
Hacksaw, angle grinder with grind disc and flap disc then wet dry sandpaper.
Then I stripped the paint and sprayed with a patina spray to match my tank. Came out great, I think. Thanks for the help guys.
