Shock absorber clevis to eye adapter?

koolio

Been Around the Block
I have a pair of eye to eye shock absorbers, which I was hoping to fit to a swing arm that requires a clevis not an eye fitting, is there any reasonable way to do this or should I just order the ones I need? It'd be a real shame it's a nice pair of shocks and Hagons are not cheap.

I was hoping there would be an easier resolution, I'm not a welder and would have to outsource this.

Taking the shocks to a welding shop should not be all that expensive. It's a relatively small job for them but huge for us non-welders. I've had several repairs or add-on's that needed welded and I don't think I've ever paid more than $25 for the work including making a new side stand replacing an aluminum one I bent.

just my $0.02

Welding on shocks is a bad idea. Always.

Sell the shocks to someone who can use them, and use the cash to buy yourself some that'll work for your bike.

This is what I decided too, thanks.

I think your fine to weld them yourself

Shocks are just metal cylinders filled with oil. Heat them up too much and bad things happen. The only way to safely change the ount on his shock would likely be to cut the old mount off and weld a new one directly to the shock body. Bad idea.

Sorry, thought it was a given that one would tear it down first

Im not sure how you would tear down a rear shock to the point the oil comes out?
Well, you could do that but re-assembly would be a pain then ;)

Rear shocks like hagons are welded shut and sealed and can not be opened. welding on them is just crap. Hackjob deluxe, and so i would also recommend not to do that.

I've welded up shocks before, just be smart use heat transfer gel and don't weld all of it at once, done it on my cb360, snowmobile shocks(all the time) just don't get them hot and take your time. But don't take my word for it, only work in a weld/fab/machine/race shop

They are also welded at the factory with fluid in them

You're right. Professional welder. In a professional shop. Everybody out there with a 110 buzz box should go ahead and stard welding on their shocks.

true true i didn't think about it that way, I always find myself assuming people have the same knowledge and skill..

In a related topic, how about the extenders we saw on that bike of the month a while back?

Notice the red adapter part at shock/swingarm mount. Nothing similar to be done? I'm not welding on hagons, but this seems a little more straightforward

That sort of thing works to lengthen a clevis-end shock - wouldn't work for a conversion nearly as easily.

I spoke to Hagons last year about extending the shock or changing the clevis to an eye and they certainly do not recoend any welding in that area. They said the oil reservoir is there and any heat from welding could expand the oils and blow the seals quite easily.

I was looking to extend them like below or adapt some long MX shocks. Hagon claimed they didn't do the extension on a special order but were curious as to how they would be able to rebuild the shock after welding

Just wondering if the shocks you want to mod are going on a CB as generally, well the larger capacity cb's the shocks are longer than on most other bikes like the Suzuki clevis shocks.
