Shocks

I've got a '78 CB550 and i'm in the process of rebuilding it. That brings me to the rear shocks, is there any way to disassemble them? I'd like to take them apart to clean and paint them. Any suggestions?

I went through the $50 mod list and found the one on this topic, but it didn't really explain how to do it very well. Are there clips that come out when the spring is compressed?

When the springs are copressed twe retainer (much like valve spring retainers)( half circes) become loose and can be removed allowing the spring to be pulled off.
