That Monarch brings back fond memories ;D Does it have a screw-in stop for the cross-slide? That makes threading much easier. ;) You just use the compound to feed in, and can back off the cross-slide at the end of the cut, back off the part, and crank the cross-slide back to exactly the right spot.
