shortening cables

If I remember correctly there is a company in California that sell all the bits and pieces to do your own cables, plus instructions on how to. I want to say the company name is Flanders or maybe something similar. Sorry I can't help any more than that.

A bicycle shop near my house was able to sell be the braided cable for $5 with one end already installed I put this in the old sleeve which I cut down. the next time I do this I'm actualy going to solder the end on because my throttle cable broke and I had to wrap it around my finger and yank to get home (can you say dangerous?) luckily I didn't do the clutch because if that broke while riding I'd be fucked. I'm redoing the cables this winter. I'll be using bicycle brake cables for both the throttle and clutch I'm going to make sure I solder the ends on so that they don't come off like the crimp on ends I used last time. till then I'm just going to deal with the long clutch cable.

The proper way to shorten a cable only needs logic. Hold the cable up to the lever to find out how much to remove and mark the length. Keep in mind that cables need some slack to work properly. Cut the casing being careful not to damage the cable, a dremel works well for this. Now measure the length of the cut casing and cut the same amount from the cable itself. Find a piece of round stock, the unthreaded part of a bolt will work, and drill a hole just big enough for the cable to pass through. The hole must be countersunk on one side. Slide the cable through and weld it with a mig, grind or file it smooth and you're done.
If you don't have a mig the local welding shop will usually do this. Just make sure you have a Timmies card with $10 on it.
Buying a round will get you everywhere when it comes to small jobs --- within reason.
