should i be bitching at carpy?

Been Around the Block
so i recieved my seat from good ole carpy, love the seat... but it is going to require a good amount of finish work. seems to be a shit gel coat job to me but im not an expert in fiberglass. tons of pinholes that has required a lot of spot putty... and i suck at bodywork. i guess my question here is how much finish work should be considered acceptable for what ended up being a $180 seat? i wasnt expecting it to be ready to paint, but i wasnt expecting this much work for a new part either...
attached a few pics, if its redish its spot putty, and im not done...
should i be bitching? thought id ask some gurus before being a pain in his ass...

for $180 i'd want it to be ready to paint..

I would probably of complained about that much. I can see a light sand and MAYBE one or two small spots with filler to be acceptable. It really depends on how much work Carpy told you would be needed to get ready for paint, before you complain.

Price aside, if I buy a gel coated seat I expect a clean finish. Then again if it was sold as a second or used, buyer beware.

Give him a call, he'll make sure your happy. I have chatted with him a bit, and he is a really nice guy... but nice don't pay the bills.

it's probably a badly cured one that got through. don't know what his QC is like, but I was considering a boxed swingarm or exhaust from him. I'd expect better.

I'd bet he'd replace something that needed that much work, but since you already did the work maybe see if he'll give you a discount on something else. like a checkered flag sticker with betty page holding a wrench and a skull with goggles and every other cliche you can think of to let the world know you are one retro daddy-o. ::) or one of his cajillion products with the word 'cafe' all over them. ::) ::)

jus goofin, I like his stuff. but cliched is an understatement.

jesus... I'd get him on the horn and see what can be done. I don't let my stuff get out the door unless it's ready to prime and paint, and I mean, READY, as in, primer, paint, clear, done. that looks like it was a mistake that got through somehow, maybe he's outsourced his glass work and packaging and just warehouses seats, but my guess is if he saw that, it wouldn't have ended up on your doorstep

thats bullshit man. im sorry, but thats unacceptable. i dont know steve and so on... but thats just shitty work. there seems to be a lot of beef towards carpy floatin around recently. seems like maybe hes not living up to his name so much anymore. especially for $180. i paid MUCH less than that for a seat from roccity and after cleaning off the dust, laid my paint. the same day i got it. just sayin...

Man thats a shame cus i was looking at his "Rocket Four" seat as a possible alternative if making my own doesnt go well. Ill be sending it out for paint because i suck at body work, looks like it could end up being expensive.

In all fairness, it seems that anybody that has had a problem with him has had a good result in the end. It's odd that there have been 2 complaints about him so recently, maybe it's just a busy time for him?

I'm sure a lot of people are ordering stuff now - especially that the weather is getting nicer. I'm sure if you have a problem, he will try and make it right though.

:-[ jeez... i guess i'm gonna have to get a hold of him today, he's a great guy to deal with.... im sure he'll make things right.
rock, next time its you buddy.... i was kickin back and forth between you and carpy for weeks, guess i went the wrong direction!
i'll keep you all posted, hell i already got a free shirt and poster for the paypal f up... not sure what else he is going to want to do... i knew i should have just sent it back!
Thanks!

if you don't find a decent painter in your area, you could get a hold of me. I've been painting for over 12 yrs. but I don't specialize in bikes, it's more for fun than money at this point(bike parts), I'd be cheaper if I have the time. I make all my $ doing fine finish stuff restoring houses. but I have spray booth, etc. and can do amazing things with filler. ;) I can do pinstriping, decals, stripes, scallops, hot rod flames, etc. but no ghost flames or barbarians vs. wizards(airbrushed stuff). I mostly hook up friends at this point. might start doing more eventually, once I get an employee to help me with the house stuff.

no guarantee I won't be too busy, just an idea.

I borrowed , filled and sanded norvil seat(750 commando),,,just one copy,,,for me ,,,,I sold my last seat for $75.00,,,never again!!!!!!No complaints,,,just to much time to fill in the bubbles

o.k. after a few emails i feel a better about this situation. i can safely say i am a sastisfied customer. on that note, ok one slipped through the cracks... happens. no harm no foul, unless the customer is a complete idiot (me). so i must say that i f'd up and posted here and somewhere... with out first trying to fix this with him. that and i started hacking it before giving it a complete once over.
by posting this i feel as might have stirred some unwanted shit that could have been avoided with a phone call. :-[
i expected nothing to come of all this the second i realized i had cut it before i found the issues, that said i got everything i wanted, a "sorry, what would you like me to do"
i hope i havent detered anyone, but if you do get a dud, DONT FUCK WITH IT... CALL HIM!!! he is a pleasure to deal with, and will do you right one way or another.
note: this was not endorsed by carpy in any way
D :-[

ill post a pic of the seat when im done, it wasn't horrible... and didnt affect anything other then cosmetic. so far it still has the sex appeal i was going for!

Good on ya for apologizing dude, that takes guts. Carpy has been cool any time i emailed him. No harm, no foul...go build your badmutha and post up some pics of the progress!!

It's cool - the whole post started with "Should I...." instead of "Listen to what this mofo did!!"

Again, seems like anybody that has had a problem has gotten it taken care of pretty quick. Glad to hear it worked out for ya!

Not to stir shit, but that's kinda a crappy thing to do, people who make custom parts spend the better part of a week building and getting a model perfect before making a mold, the part cost reflects a tiny fraction of the time invested in that, and the maker needs to sell quite a few parts to recoup the time invested in the model. To grab a part with the intention of reproducing it and reselling it more or less screws the maker. I'm sure there are exceptions, like making molds of old production stuff that no one's making anymore, but to copy a Carpy seat that he came up with is a little immoral imho.
