Should I buy??

Been Around the Block
So as you guys know, I am moving to the UK soon and my wife came up with a wonderful idea.... Instead of buying 2 cars right off the bat, she suggested that I get a bike!!! I didn't argue.... The olny thing is I have a pretty tight budget. I have found quite a few nice bikes within my budget, most of them 80's hondas but 1 did find a 1988 BMW r80rt that is in my budget... My only question is, can I remove the fairing on this bike? I like the fairing for long touring rides, but as I am going to be using this as my primary mode of transport I would like to be able to take it off.. Here are a few shots of the bike I am looking at...

Hell ya you can remove the fairing. Thats a GREAT everyday ride man. Id buy it.

Cool, I just saw some of them that had the ignition switch wired into the fairing.... the ad does mention that the bike has an RS fairing fitted and not the RT fairing..

I am pretty stoaked about it, I have always liked these airheads....

Even if it was the factory correct fairing, it would be a relativly small job to remove it. That bike looks gorgeous.

Thats what I was thinking, and I wouldn't have to remove it in order to ride....

Yeah, the guy says in the ad that the paint is not great but from what I can see in the pics it looks top knotch...

OU! NICE!!! I want a Bimmer sooo bad. How many miles on this thing? Gotta be a ton.

Ad says it had 46k.... It has been around Europe twice, and has been used as a commuter bike the last 2 years... It has been properly maintained (so the ad says) so hopefully she is as sound mechanically as she looks..

Just remember the downsides to riding as your only mode of transportation.

You'll get wet, eventually. I don't mean a little bit either. (with rainproof gear and a half hour commute I was drenched down to my boxers at times)
You can't haul shit.
Tires don't last as long (really depends on commute as to how bad it will be)
Oil changes are needed much more frequently (because you'll still ride just to ride, or at least I did)
When it's cold, it's really cold.
You don't always have parts sitting at a shop close by if something goes wrong.
Downtime only works if you're unemployed.

But it's so worth it. Buy that bike, or if not then steal it and post the parts one by one over here so i can chop it up.

While I would love to have 2 wheels for primary transportation, a cage def has it's advantages.

But if that BMW was my main mode of transport, I'd keep the fairing on it til I did get a cage. Just my 2 cents.

Ditto to the fairing. That's my soul idea behind my CX500 project, ride the CX rain, hail or shine unless the cage is really necessary. So much better with a fairing.

Not saying it's not. I did it all through winter while my Civic needed a new motor. But it put a major crimp in doing a lot of things. Not too mention, it "sounds" cheaper, but its not. It's pretty much equal to buying a used car with cash up front.

Once my bike is going again, I'll barely be in the Civic. ;D

Same with the CX, once that's going the trucks gonna rust away. My old SR (now a project) was my daily for over six months, clip ons and all, hence my appreciation for a fairing now ;)

It should be fine to at least 150,000 miles when it will probably need a clutch and maybe piston rings
(did I mention I worked in a Suzuki/BMW/Vespa dealer in 80's? :D)
I doubt if you will want to remove fairing, riding in Britain is a bit 'different', people will think you crashed it ;D
Don't forget price of gas there, something economical will be a big plus.
BTW, what area are you moving to?

That is kinda the plan... with a baby on the way we want to get my wife a good car first, and then I can just pick something up down the line.. A cage is not a requirement for me right off the bat!!

thanks for the tips (gas is a bit pricey there 8 pound a gallon last time I was there)... we are moving to the midlands, Warwickshire to be exact. My wifes family lives in the town of Warwick and with baby on the way, she wants to be close to her mom... No quams with me, there are quite a few really nice Day Rides around that area and the Waterman (biker gathering pub where we got engaged) is really close!! Lots and Lots of British motoring history around that area!!!
