So Close! Would Tossing On Air Filters Do The Trick?

Been Around the Block
My CB360 Frankenbike is so close to being a full time runner. I have the CB450 Carbs synched and jetted decently well. I get a few backfire pops when decelerating, but idle is steady. I have #35 slow jets in the carbs (slightly lean) which replaced the #38 slow jets from before (too rich). I am not running any air filters on the bike (it didn't come with any). Would slapping on some aftermarket air filters enrich the mixture slightly enough for a happy equilibrium, or would it make the mixture too rich?

Also, what air filters can I use for the CB360's funky frame? It appears that the conical type air filters would interfere with the frame and battery box.

You definately need to put in an airfilter. I do not know where your airfilter is seated, but alot of people like using pod style filters. Check K&N, they have a ton of filter styles and sizes to choose from. I have an 1978 yamaha xs1100 and i am going to put in pod filters. For my bike it will make it very easy to remove the carbs & it looks nice to boot! My stock airbox is mounted inside the frame and it is a pain in the ass to remove.

I did a little eyeballing and it looks like the K&N's will not fit, but man would they look sweet! I ended up getting a pair of Uni pod filters since they look like they can be easily bent to fit. The CB360 frame is weirdly shaped in that the K&N's would either hit the frame by where the sidecovers are mounted, or run smack into the battery box. When the filters get in and I do a diagnosis test ride I will report back.

you can get K&N filters with bent flanges to fit the 360 frame...

Replace the #38's / PODS and work from there

Sorry if I am wrong about this, but wouldn't moving up to the #38 slow jets make the mixture way too rich?

The Uni's came in Saturday and I tossed em on the bike. The engine idled very well, but when I took it for a test ride, it was evident that the mixture was back to being too rich: a tad boggy at 0-1/8 turn of the throttle, unsteady idle/stalling at stoplights, dark deposits on plugs.

I had some decent performance with the air filters off albeit running a tad lean (slightly light colored plugs) but I want to have air filters on to prevent engine damage. As a backup I put myself on a "waiting list" for a vintage motorcycle repair shop to get this thing running at 100%.

The uni pod filters are underrated and under used imho. I have use them for years without issues. K and N are too much money.

Yep - I'm running (or will be) UNI filters on my XS650. I like the way they look, they're cheap, they're simple... what's not to like?
