Been Around the Block
So I'm aware that this is not an uncommon method for dealing with clubman bars hitting the tank, but since I've already done it, I figured I would take pictures and share. So I started by checking out my steering stops to see how thick they were, found an appropriately sized drill bit, and put a hole through each stop. From what I understand, its best to take the smallest amount of material away possible to try and preserve the integrity of the stop. So I didn't use a very large bit. From there I went to the local hardware store found bolts small enough to fit through the hole. I personally used 4-40 bolts and washers. They aren't pretty, but tend to go with function over form. To secure it I used a Ny-Loc lock nut to make sure it won't rattle loose. I stacked the washers up on each side until I was comfortable with the stop distance and the position of the bars with the side of the tank. Now, I'm not saying this option is for everyone. Its probably not. You do lose some low speed steering travel and some people don't like that. But my theory is that the only time I'll be using that much travel is parking lot situations? Since I'm not brave enough to dent my tank in at this point where the bars would connect, this option was what was best for me.
I've got a few photos of the stops for illustration.
My bike is dirty. I know.
