I got a set of 4 of the cheapy emgo pods for my cb550. Whats the procedure on oiling these? Emgo doesn't specifically say. Ive got some of the K&N filter oil if they need it. Any recommendations?
Thanks
-James
Don't oil them. The K&N oil might dissolve the cheap paper element in the emgo.. then you will have oily paper bits sucked into your carbs
K&N filters elements are cotton layers within a resin coated screen and are designed to be a washable and re-oiled .
By the way, the emgo is just paper sandwiched in a screen, if you hold it up to a bright light, you can see little beams of light coming through. Imaging all of that dirt coming through those same holes ! Calling the emgo pod a "filter" is generous at best. A proper filter like a K&N or a Uni-Filter filtration is rated in microns. The emgo pods are little more than screens and might keep pebbles and sand grains out... yet nothing much smaller ....
EMGO filters are the best performance de-graders you can put on the bike. the are much smaller than ANY other filter, they have less surface area, poorer filtering, block important ports on the front inlet of the carburetor.
Woah! Should have put on my flame suit!? Thanks for the advice guys. I'll have to trade up and get some k&n's pretty soon. They are just pretty spendy. I suppose it doesn't improve my odds if I spray an emgo pod with k&n oil...lol
thanks guys
You are missing something important here. You will never get your engine to run properly with those filters. The flange of the filter blocks vital ports in the entrance of your carbs. They aren't just shitty filters. THEY DON'T WORK.
Are K&Ns pricey yes but well worth it ! If to take care of them they last along time ! Are emgos cheap yes but would have to by a case or two of them to last as long as the K&Ns you pick !
You are missing Alpha Dog's point...THEY DON'T WORK.
EMGOs, should never be purchased by anyone or used for anything. They are a waste of money. A coffee filter zip tied around your carb would do a better job

This was so perfect, I created a new package and emailed it to the EMGO marketing department. They are all set now, they just needed the asterisk next to the word filter and a proper disclaimer :
I was joking about the oil! That emgo package had me and my buddies laughing tho. Too funny. I'll pick up K&Ns. No excuses. I'll get them ordered today.
But don't forget UNI fliters which are good and cost effective. Just fit the longest ones you can fit for more filtration area and least resistance to flow. I have 4" long on a TZ to keep rocks and small animals out and on the Phat Trakka on teh street I use 6" long and they are oiled.
Oh,,, and I like the uni's too because there is more of a straight shot into the throat of the carb. The K&N cone types still have an obstruction in the form of that end cap that disrupts air flow. just 'sayin
