Yeah, that CM400 isn't too impressive. Their CB550 looks pretty nice though. I do enjoy their apparent affinity for unpainted, polished tanks. I think I might have an idea for that POS tank I have...

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(44+ Build Links!)

Thanks Man, Yeah I did remove the crossover and the 2-1 was scrapped do the way it sounded, so now I am running just the stock head pipes into 1.5" pipe into the reverse cone mufflers. The bike idles pretty decent but falls on its face when given the throttle, so now I am just trying to figure out what size jets will be needed.

Your bike is coming along as well, good luck with you build.

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(44+ Build Links!)

Just a thought to throw out there in reference back to that twinline bike: one of the changes that he has made since that pic is a 2-1 exhaust setup (1 cylinder exhaust crosses over and there's one muffler on the right side of the bike). He said it made a substantial improvement in the way the bike runs overall. I'll have to get him to elaborate the next time I talk to him but he said it was like finding an answer he wasn't even looking for. He was just changing it to switch things up.
Doesn't have that lower valance deal on it anymore either.

Hey, I stumbled upon these 33mm clipons last night for $39.99 plus $10 shipping. They're really simple (no real adjustability or anything) but they look more quality than the ones from 250champ (ebay seller name) for $75 and the seller has good ratings. I bought a set, and they shipped already, so I'll let you know in the next few days.

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(44+ Build Links!)

Good Find and post here for all of us 33mm guys. With the popularity of Cafes, It was only a matter of time before Hong Kong started offering something like this. Next will be rear sets and seats......

I like the look with the cut outs in the clamps. As with anything made there though, always concerned with quality. I am also curious about the comfort of what appears to be a 90 degree angle to the forks, so I look forward to your "review".

The ones from 250champ are $65....($49.99 + $15 Shipping) if you want to "Bid" http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CLIP-ONS-33MM-HONDA-CB-YAMAHA-KAWASAKI-SUZUKI-RACE-/150619661178?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2311a1a37a Or $75 Shipped Buy it Now.

Ziggy "Budgeted CM400e"

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(45+ Build Links!)

haven't purchased yet, on my to do list. and i'm still running 33 mm tubes so i anticipate that they will come with some sort of adapter.
i'll let you guys know when i get em

on a related note: anybody remove the air assist option on their forks? i'm anticipating some lowering of the front end, but the cm400t has and air line connecting the left and right at the top. it would look really bad raised up and inch or so.

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(45+ Build Links!)

Air Assist? we don't need no stinkin' Air Assist.......

Honestly, I have no idea mine is all '80 and earlier, I don't think they started with the air until '81.

Could you just replace the 2 fork caps with '80 or earlier? are the internals (Check Bike Bandit Exploded views) Very/Any different Air to non air? Was this just a simple balance tube and capability to stiffin a little with air?

if they would work

1978-1980 cm400 forks work with these (at least the website for the caps says they replace that p/n

here's the air assist forks

question still remains, can non-air assist caps replace air assist?

Hey guys, just got home late and my bars were here... Thought I'd throw up a couple quick pics being as I'm excited enough that I should probably burn off a little steam before I try to sleep.

The worry that a couple guys brought up (and I was frankly a bit worried about because I didn't notice before I bought them) about the bars being perpendicular to the fork turned out to be not true!
IMG_0693.jpg

The clamps are CNC'd and have some minor adjustability. The bars appear to be made of aluminum.

Clamps might be a little "overdone" but I think they'll look decent.

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(45+ Build Links!)

Cool. Those look nice. Let us know how the install goes

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(45+ Build Links!)

bbelka,

I have to admit those look nicer than I expected. Hopefully this will be an alternative to ""250Champs" welded steal clip ons. Post after you have them mounted, and I look forward to your...."What do I do with all the extra cable?" post.

Bacon,

If you want to pull one of your "Air Assist" Fork Caps and throw a pic (Emphasis on the threaded end) up here with dimensions, I can do the same for a CM400e & CM400t Fork Caps. I am going to make a wild guess that they do work. I was thinking though. Do you percieve the "Air assist" as an improvement/asset to have on your cafe?. Because I could see a nicely done Stainless tube set up, or a Polished Brass Fittings and bent Polished Copper hard line (Kinda Retro Vintage) as maybe being a nice look?

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(45+ Build Links!)

Probably won't get around to installing until Saturday but I'll definitely let you all know how it goes.

frank-
Luckily, I'm already running clubmans, so the change shouldn't be too drastic. Although, my throttle cables currently loop out well passed my headlight ;) . Also, we have a great salvage yard nearby where they just keep all of the salvaged cables on a shelf so you can compare length, ends, etc. Should be able to go compare and find something that will greatly reduce slack. Thinking about just riding down there and installing in the parking lot, so I am sure to get the right length the first time 8) . They even said they'd just trade me for good shape cables...

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(45+ Build Links!)

Bbelka, could you post up the dimensions of your clubmans when you post up your clip on pics.. as well as comparison pics too? I'm in the clubman / clip on debate right now.. and wanna see how the pull back and height of the two compare. What made you wanna go with clip-ons?

And how's the tank clearance on these versus clubmans? That'd also be good to know :)

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(45+ Build Links!)

OK so it sounds like we have a little Cheap Clip On Comparison going on here Between ebay "250Champ" Steel 33mm Clip Ons, bbelka's find - 33mm Alloy Chinese ebay Clip Ons find & Baconpocket's Moped Clip Ons.

We also have the discussion about the CM400e Steel Triple Tree Set Up vs the CM400t's Steel and Alloy.

Here are pics of 250champs Steel Clip Ons mounted right under the Steel Upper CM400e Triple Plate. Notice the slightly larger overall diameter of the Fork Caps as Securing Metond to Upper Fork Tube.

I found this position to be comfortable and did not hit the tank at these angles. I do expect the clip ons to be mounted slightly lower in relationship to the frame stem with the CM400t Alloy Upper Triple, due to its greater thickness and slope to the clamps shape.
