So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(50+ Build Links!)

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(46+ Build Links!)

DISCLAIMER: This is one mans Opinion /Understanding and should be Confirmed with as much Google as possible.

I have understood that basically all Honda speedometers cab be interchanged as they all work on the the same gear ratio mechnics. Additionally every Mecahnical Speedo cable I have seen 70's -80's Hondas had the same basic ends. And the designs of drive units are very similar. This also seems to be supported by the idea and practice of Honda Engineers to use as many common parts and engineering as possible.

So I would suspect that any era similar OEM speedo or aftermarket Speedo made for a model from that era should work. I think you may be overthinking it.

All this said I am about to test this idea to it's outer bounderies a Mid 60's CB77 Speedo driven by a 1979 CM400T Drive Unit.

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(46+ Build Links!)

To Add to What Frankenfe said, the important part on the bike is not the speedo, they are all the same, it is the drive at the wheel that is bike specific, if you put the wrong one on your speedo will be off. I have 2, one fro a 19 inch wheel, one fro an 18, if you mix them up you get different speeds at the same RPM. Ask me how I know ;D

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(46+ Build Links!)

Makes Sense Maritime and good point...a 19'' Tire will cover more ground in one rotation than an 18" Soumds like the Cable rotation math is calculated and set at the gearing within the drive unit to communicate the speed once it leaves the drive unit to a Common standard the Common Speedos can display, depending on the tire size it was made for.

I will have to look at the gearing on the various ones I have From 18" and 19" rims.

Alright, so I am pretty sure that I wanna sell my Hawk. Preferably I would want to just get back whatever I put into it.
What are the usual prices that these bikes go for in your neck of the woods?

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(46+ Build Links!)

Like any bike, it depends on ........What condition is it in?, Is it Running?, Do you have clear title? How many miles? are there any significant repair issues? How complete is it? How original is it?

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(46+ Build Links!)

I have mine listed fro 800, but it is a half cafe not pretty but mechanically ok bike, There are some stock ones in excellent shape for sale right now around me for 1500-2000 bucks. Not sure if they are getting that for them but the bikes look showroom and are low miles.

On another note. Had a very strange thing occur with my bikes engine I would like to share. I am selling it to get the money to go to Baber this year. So of course I do some things to fix it up. I changed the oil and then fired it up to warm it up and check the level after running, I notice the cam chain is a little loud so I grab the 10mm ratcheting box end and per the clymers I loosen the tensioner nut and the chain gets noisey and ten quiet and then I snug it up, as I am snugging it makes a funny sound and stalls, well I figure it wasn't a big deal and I get a call from the house that honey do's need doing and head in. I go back later and bike won't run, won't even fire: Read this and see what I went through;

Be careful doing the cam tensioner routine!

Clear title, 10k of miles on it. The bottom gasket needs replacing. It gets wet and sometimes has one or two drops of oil collecting. Rear shocks need to be rebuilt or replaced. Everything original except the mufflers.

I brought the o'girl back to life the other day. What a feeling! Won't stay idling, but I expected that. I purchased a cdi from cdimagician. Great seller, prompt delivery.

I noticed there is a plunger type switch on the clutch lever, would this cause the bike to not start when engage visa versa?

Hey guys,

Heres my 78 cb400t. I'm not done with it yet, but you get the idea.

However, I need a left carburetor. If anyone has one for sale I'd love to take it off their hands. I'll even buy a set if necessary.

Wow awesome bike! I'm really liking how the stock seats look on the cb400t's.

Any more pics? possibly higher resolution? Bike looks great. I'm gathering ideas for my CM400.

+1

I'm interested in what you did with your pipes. I'm planning on doing something similar if not exact to that settup.

1. I've got an extra set of carbs, but I let a buddy of mine take the air cut-off valve diaphragms out. If you don't need 'em, we can discuss a deal. I only paid $5 for them so if you pay for shipping they're yours.

2. What is the front end off of? Or is it just a different triple tree top?

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(46+ Build Links!)

I can explain a little about the top triple tree. on some of the Late 70's Early 80's Cb400T and CM400's A pressed steel upper triple teee was used. it is attached by effectively bolting dowwn at the 3 points, 1) the Stem Nut and 2/3) the Fork Tube top nuts. The bug nuts on top of the fork tubes are slightly different than those found on an alloy upper triple. They are slightly ofer sized so they do not slide trhrough the triple tree but clap it to the top of the tube. They also have a small internal nut that keeps the fork springs recessed in the tubes. It appearsthey were used on the Spoked Vesions of these bikes and an alloy upper tree used on bikes with ComStars.

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(46+ Build Links!)

I believe I have the same upper and I have comstars.

Thanks for the compliments guys. I'm at work right now so I will post some more pictures tomorrow or Sunday. I still have quite a bit of work left to do but I'm getting there. The exhaust is just the stock headers with universal emgo shorty mufflers attached. They didn't fit quite right so I used gasket maker to seal them on. We will see how that works when they get hot. As far as the seat goes, it is just the stock pan with the foam shaved down. I then took it to an upholster and he did a pretty good job with it. It cost me $150 though. The front end is stock, but I lowered the headlight and took the handle bar mounts off the top triple tree piece.
