socal cb360T build

you mentioned one of the pistons was stuck but there was no scoring on the cylinder? that's rare... a stuck piston will almost always leave damage to the cylinder. when you installed the new rings, did you check the gap after honing the cylinders? an excessive ring gap could account for both the smoke and low compression.

@ ROCK CITY CY, To be honest ,when i was at my friends shop he had lend his honer out, i just went gun ho, i put the new rings in, and never honed. The cylinder jugs looked clean and smooth to me but then again i could be wrong.
What do you recommend on doing? pulling it apart and honing ,Will i need new rings or can i still use these ones i installed?
I mean my bike is running fine , the only thing i am concerned about is the excessive smoke out of the breather hole and smoke out of the right cylinder. Is it normal to get smoke out of the breather hole? does this mean i am burning oil.

When you installed the rings, did you align them properly? The ring gaps should form a triangle after they're placed onto the pistons. Each gap 120° from the last and no gaps along the "line" of the wrist pin.

Hey, 150 PSI should be fine and the fact that both cylinders have the same compression is a good sign as well. The darker plug looks like it's got oil build up on it.

I don't think the carbs are related to your problem for a few reasons, one of which is that white smoke comes from oil, not gas and another thing is that the carbs didn't just wake up one morning with different jetting in them (so what changed to cause the problem?). Most carb problems will be lack of fuel (dirty or plugged up), not excess fuel which would just cause the bike to run sluggish and smell like fuel at the exhaust. Oh and Carb problems tend to effect the way the bike runs quite a bit but you say the bike runs fine.

I'd be checking valve stem seals! Pull your carbs and carefully inspect the intake ports for signs of oil, while this is not a sure fire way to tell if there's a problem with vs seals it couldn't hurt to check for anything obvious.

That plug will be fouling soon and the bike will start to run poorly when it does, the smoke will probably get worse too if you keep riding it. I'd throw some valve stem seals in there and run it again if it was mine.

Thanks small. so replace the valve seals 10 dollar fix. i did notice lots of smoke coming out of my heads air breather hole. That should be the case then , can i keep riding if i keep her toped off meanwhile i wait for the seals? or should i just not even bother with it?

yes i staggered the rings properly

I guess you could ride it but the seals should be pretty quick anyway. You'll need to remove the head to replace the seals so it's a little more then $10 cuz gaskets need to be replaced also... At this point you can inspect the Pistons since you'll be in there anyway, I'd re-use everything if there's no damage (Pistons, rings, etc.). It's still a cheap fix so just get in there and knock it out ;)

word up i like your way of thinking i bought the seals they where like 7.25 a piece .I still have liquid gasket left for the head and i can probably reuse the cylinder jugs gasket. i am just going to do an oil change for now since i want to ride her this weekend . afterwards back to tear down mode should only take a few hours 8) Should i hone this time around, also is it common to have lots of smoke come out of the air breather?

I don't think there should be any smoke coming from the breather, is the breather you speak of on the crankcase or the head cover?

head cover. why would i be getting smoke then? i did remove the stock air box.

Just a thought but if your valve seals are bad, they could leak oil into the ports and smoke from the exhaust port could enter into the head through there too? There's nothing going on under the head cover that would create smoke so I'd think it's from combustion. Not to be a pessimist but I think a valve guide is more likely to cause the smoke from the head cover then a valve seal, you'd better check them carefully before you put the thing back together... :(

I'm thinking the pistons are not the cause of the problem. Likely a valve guide.

Well i have been ignoring the fact that i need to tear down my top end to figure out why i am burning to much oil, and just riding and enjoying my bike.

I haven't read all posts, you did put rings on the right way up and in the correct order?
Letter should be upwards (T, R, S, etc)
Oil ring is too wide to fit anywhere but correct groove, the middle ring is all black and has a lip which should be facing down, top ring is chrome faced.
If you have middle ring upside down in top groove it pumps oil into combustion chamber and lets combustion pressure leak into crankcase
Your sure it's oil coming out and not just water vapor?

Yeah rings with the letters right side up , i made sure not to mess up the order they where in. it has been running ok maybe i need to just putt a pod filter where the heads air breather hole is . I havent noticed the white smoke lately . I also havent gone for a long one hour ride down the CA. freeway either ! who knows i will go on a long ride and see how she does when the rain clears up. Thanks
