Some paint ideas, suggestions...

1982 CB650C
So im sitting in my dorm room listening to some crappy techno and messing around on illustrator. i came up with a few paint ideas for my cb650 project. First one is an army theme. its kind of corny and overdone, and it really doesn't work with the chrome because army vehicles/planes don't have any chrome. the second is a WWII fighter jet theme. Silver with some black letter/stripe and the Canadian air force symbol, maybe a pin-up girl on top of the tank . I kind of like it, but dont know if it will get old realy fast. I have and idea to make the tank look like aluminum without just clearcoating the metal. House of colour has new kinds of paint now that are suppose to look like metal. One is for chrome, and is suppose to give the reflective look, and the others are silver, gold, and copper. I think if i could use the chrome and just leave a flat finish to the clearcoat, it should look like brushed aluminum, or i could keep the gloss look for a chrome finish. Third and fourth ideas are simple black with some different decals. Classic and timeless. Anyway let me know what you guys think, :D

If I can be of any help, don't paint it black. I was thinking of going a Dakar yellow (BMW Z3), but them I would have to paint the frame, anyways I decided to go black and now I am paying for it, it's called swirl marks and finger prints. I detail my own vehicles and you always get someone who likes touching things, if you have no problem with that then go for it, I truly wish I could go back to the Dakar yellow.

nice mock-ups...I've always been partial to matte black, just because its cheap. ;D

Ironic that you say the army theme is overdone, but you then suggest black. I've always liked the army green, but doing a japanese bike in WWII US army colors seems so wrong, so I haven't been able to do it.

The second one sounds cool, I wouldn't blow your money on chrome paint though, Alsa corp makes similar claims with their crappy mirrachrome, and HOC is just playing catch up with their product. It's a prep NIGHTMARE, unless you are an experienced painter that can put down an absolutely flawless black gloss, it will not work. If you do get it to work you cannot touch it... ever. Worried about swirl marks and fingerprints?! With chrome paint they are guaranteed and you can't get rid of them, think of it as a really really really fine powder dusting (because that's essentially what it is) if you touch it, it will come off on your finger. You can clearcoat over it to solve these problems but if you do that it will dull out and you'll just have a silver paint job... that cost you several hundered dollars more than any other silver.

Thanks for the input on the HOC chrome. I will stay away from that. Actually, now I think I might try to attain a flat silver look to imitate a brushed aluminum surface. A flat black stripe down the side of a flat silver would look pretty cool. Im not sure how to go about obtaining a flat finish. Is there a clear coat with a flat finish? or could i just wet sand the final layer of clear and leave it like that? Would a flat grey look the same as a flat silver?? I'm a rookie painter and don't have any experience with different paints. all i know how to do sand, prep, and spray. Thanks for the help :)

ppg does have flat clear products mainly DCU 2060 (often called "flexed and flat") you can also add their silica flattener to regular DCU 2002 (can't recall the part number) a little goes a long way.

Obviously you can't do it with the tail, but can you leave the tank unpainted and brush it for real? Por15 makes a product called Glisten PC that I have yet to try out, but it's supposed to stick to bare metal. Any coating like that will cloud a polished surface, but brushed should work really well.

universal blue my fave, dark anough look black drom distence but when you get up close relized it not same as every other bike, and it no diff in price than mat black

I like 2 - never seen it done before.
(says the guy with a black checkered bike and an army green/red star bike under his belt)

I think a nice, metalic silver (think BMW titanium silver) knocked down with the 2060 clear would look cool. That's just my thoughts.

I think a sliver with a flat clear would be the safest rout. Plus I want the seat and tank to match. I played around some more on Illustrator, I added a yellow and black checker. I know that checkers is overdone, but this is a little different. I'm not sure about the rivets. They don't look very good and they would be a pain in the ass to paint. Maybe a simple flat silver with a yellow and black checker pattern would be good. I wont be painting it until June so I have lots of time to try out different ideas.

Looking at your graphic, there does not appear to be any compound curves on the tank. if this is the case, you could cut the individual pieces out of 18-16ga 6061-T6 and solid rivit it together. This could be done very inexpensively. The slightly more difficult part would be to get a custom bladder made for the inside of the tank. You'll have to check with race car fuel cell fabricators to get a price.

All said, you should be able to get it done for under $20 in aluminum, $10 or so to get it sheared and $100-$200 (?) for the bladder. I know some small aircrafts use riveted fuel tanks without a bladder and use a (really harsh) sealer inside the tank. me, personally, would not trust this, though the FAA seems to allow it.

Thats a wild idea. It would look killer and would be very original. An easier and more inexpensive approach could be to just weld rivet heads on to the tank. I'm starting to think this theme may be a little over the top. It might look out of place on a cafe racer. It seems like more of a bobber theme to me. I'm not sure yet. I cant make up my mind.

hmmmmm, black works.and so does black.
i even heard one guy say black, and 2 other girls say black.
then again personally i think black would look good.
maybe black with a touch of black here and there.
yeah that would look cool.
black.lol 8)
