spark plugs making clicking noise (i f*ed the valve adjustment)

It's been a long time since I've done valves on a CB....

But I do remember if you have the crank at TDC you can check 4 of the valves....then turn the crank 360 deg to check the other 4...... I'm just can't recall which 4....but it should become apparent once you have the crank at TDC.

how can i tell if the engine is at TDC?

You have the points cover off? (the round chrome thing held on by two screws on lower right side of engine, looking at it from normal seating position)
It has a small round hole at around 12:00 o'clock position.
Inside the hole you can see numbers as you rotate crank (with 21 or 23mm socket, not the starter motor)
When you get to 1.4 mark, if you were keeping an eye on valve adjuster screws, you would see either #1 or #4 intake valve go down, then come back up.
When its up, and 1.4 lines up with mark on crankcase, you do wichever one came up (1 or 4) intake and exhause, the exhaust valve next to the one you adjusted, and the intake valve skipped over one cyl.
rotate engine back to 1.4 and do the other set.

awesome, this helps a lot. just to clarify.. if #1 intake valve goes up when crank is turned to 1.4 i adjust #1 intake and #1 exhaust, also #2 exhaust and #3 intake?

then i would turn crank until #4 intake valve went up and 1.4 lined up on crankcase and adjust #4 intake and #4 exhaust, also #3 exhaust and #2 intake?

also this is for cb750s right?

thanks again!!

Good to hear you got it done right, barty.

As an aside, you can also tell when an engine is at TDC by using a long thin 'something' (pen/dowel/screwdriver) to feel the piston through the spark plug hole.

In doing this, would I measure the distance through each spark plug hole to make sure all pistons were the same distance from the top? Thanks

Pistons 1 and 4 rise at the same time, 2 and 3 are 180 deg "opposite". All in line 4 cyl engines are the same (OK - except the new phased crank R1's....)

You would only need to measure piston 1 - and all you need to do is find the highest point (when the dowel/screwdriver/whatever stops moving up). That is TDC.

You will find that the mark on your points as PJ said should correspond to this too.
