Spoked with fat tyre vs Comstar with skinny

Well my cx500 is on the way, and I'm going to get it blue slipped before I start butchering it. I need new tires to pass inspection, and so it got me thinking maybe I'll ditch the 18in and 19in comstars for a 16in rear and 18 front spoked wheel set.

So my first question, is it worth ditching the stock wheels for spoked ones for the "look".

Second question is if I put a 4.5 or 5.0 tyre on a 16 in rim, what will performance be like with such a wide fat tyre?

Thanks

I would say spokes, what wheels are u gonna use if u go that route? Early Goldwing or something?

16" rear will look awful IMO.
I say go to spokes but it's not cheap

Spokes for the look, mags/comstars for the lack of constant maintenance.

I'd much rather have a 18" comstar than a 16" spoked wheel anyday, but may depend on the bike. What model CX is it?

+1 for keeping the Comstars. I ditched the mags from my SR500 to convert to spokes, and hundreds of $$$ later I should have just kept the mags.

i've found that with a little paint, comstars can look quite good....

16" Comstar never looks good.
Best I've seen on CX was dismantled Comstars, turned a couple of flanges and fitted spoked rims to original hubs
I have a 19" WM3 reverse spoke Comstar going cheapish if anyone wants it

Yep same here Dupilcolor's rattlecan "High Performance Wheel Coating" silver with the same clear coat.
Also noted is mine is a 17" rear with a 19" front. But she's a full figured gal! ;)
Here is a pic of the bike back when it was in primer so as not to distract from the wheels.

I like the Comstars and have them on my CX 500. I have 18" front and rear, original steel pattern spokes. I feel it's a major part of the character of the CX my two cents. BTW, the biggest tire to fit in the CX swingarm is a 130 is max?
Cheers, 50gary

What's there to maintain on a spoked wheel after it's built?

That's what I was thinking - there shouldn't be issues.

Maybe running tubes has more chance of leakage / flats, but that's pretty subjective too.

Well I went with keeping the Comstars. Dropped them off to be blasted and powdered in satin black. Will post a pic when they return.
