Sport Bikes (?)

Man Of Constant Throttle
Alright, if this topic is already going on here please point me to it, but what are some more recent sport bikes with the aesthetic spirit of 70s track bikes (straighter frames, lower seat clearance, round headlights, smooth curvy fairings etc...). Basically I'm getting a little bicurious and I want to know if anyone can recommend a sport bike (80s-90s, that a guy could hypothetically buy cheap and mess with) that is a realistic jump from 70s Japanese bikes and doesn't look like a raver robot or Aphex Twin farted them out.

Basically

...your thoughts?

You mean besides Ducatis' sport classics, Triumphs' Bonneville based bikes, Kawasakis' W650, MotoGuzzis' V7, and everything Ural makes.

None of those are cheap, except the Urals because they're junk.

Not sure I even understand the question. Isn't "bicurious" something to do with what sex you want to date?

For fairings, try AirTeck and Glass From The Past.
For bikes to hang them from; BMW R65 can be had in good shape for not too much. Suzuki TU250S, Yamaha SR500, Royal Enfield Bullet, Yamaha 650, Yamaha Seca is a terrific bike.

Yeah sorry, let me elaborate - I don't mean that whole wave of neo-retro bikes like the Sport Classic, TU250 etc (although I really do like the look of that SR500, anyone here have one?)...I don't see the point in them when the bikes they're made to look like still run like bullets. Im asking if anyone here has ever taken a straight up modern cock rocket, something like a Ninja, R6 etc (which are probably great machines but have an overly angular aesthetic) and done it over with a vibe closer to 70s track bikes. Y'know, "built not bought" and all that shit, but with sport bikes?

Yeah exactly. I've dated mostly Honda CB's, an XS and a GS, and I'm currently involved with a very wonderful and giving '79 CB650 and a temperamental but dashingly handsome '69 CL450 (I know he loves me, he's just had a hard life)...but I'm getting wandering eyes for the "other side", or at least checking it out. More like bikurious I guess.

Noel, I thought I remembered something of yours down in the shop, a street fighter, a modified...what?

Quite a few Monsters have been treated to that kind of conversion (most of them with little success IMHO), and there are a few renderings of SV650s floating around the interwebs with old school-ish fairings on them that look killer. I probably would have ended up mounting a fairing like that to my monster eventually if I hadn't sold it.

For the truly modern crotch rockets though, it could be done for sure, but the frames don't lend themselves to that kind of conversion. Ducati's the best option in my mind given their inherently slim dimensions.

wander over to the streetfighters section of this forum for more of that stuff.

The more modern you get, the more crap that has to be covered up. Hence model-specific body work is used to cover all that up. Not so easy to pick up a 441 Victor tank on eBy and put it on a CBR. That's why "retro" bikes are so popular. (BTW- I don't think the SR500 was made to look like anything other than what it is. A nice one for sle here in town)

I'm not sure what kind of fairing you're thinking of from the 79's. By then, dustbins were againt racing rules and Windjammer was it. Hardly racing material.

/\ NOT a rendering /\

I've seen the build-up of this one and there's a blue one as well that someone photochopped a DLS and wires onto, but both are real motorcycles. Frankly I LOVE the look too....

that sv is nice! well done...

my neighbor has an sv650, and though the bike RIPS, i dislike the stock bodywork.

Yamaha TRX850 with a cafe kit from here in Australia. Not too expensive considering the quality, and certainly looks the goods:

The website is trx850caferacer.com if you're interested. I reckon its a good idea, and the base TRX850's are supposed to be pretty good to ride.

Cheers - boingk

Now these are what I'm talking about. Thanks, I'm gonna check out those sites and threads. Yeah, I can see the challenge with the seat/frame when they just aren't straight and the seats tuck under the tanks on an angle, and the tails raise up off the fender like they do. There must be a fuller fairing that hides the bottom half of the frame. But this SV and TRX are both great looking, good work.
