SR250 build

A little info about me. Live in Florida and got my first bike about a year ago. I don't know a lot about bikes at all but I'm learning and I love it. Found a decent 1981 SR250 and didn't really plan on doing a whole lot to it. I rode it for a bit last year but now I really want to customize it and make it my own. I never really got a good pic of it before the tear down so here's a few pics of what the bike looked like when I got it.

Here are some photos of the disassembled bike. I got it down to just the engine, rear shocks, and forks on the frame.

Cosworth - I have checked out your 250 build a few times in he past and its def. a great job you did I want to take this one a more cafe route like you did as opposed to a tracker style.

I do make some custom parts for the SR. I know the parts for use for making rearsets. I may make a few rearsets for Them in the future. The forks need to get dropped internally and uprated fluid viscosity for serious road use.

The RFY 130mmm rear shocks work great with these bikes. Tank swapping is a little limited only due to the back bone arch of the top tube. Wheels from many yamahas fit.

There are plenty of cheap ebay parts for them, 31mm clip ons ($30), headlight/fork ears ($10), bar ends etc. etc.

My favourite mod is the brass fork caps mated with 12 gauge shotgun shells where the bars were (you use clip ons)

I'd like to lose the stock yamaha controls one day and have a horn, starter, high beam and kill.

And the kick start. XT250 is you best hope for a donor. It's a quick install but don't forget t buy a dowel pin for the kick spring. The SR doesn't have one. I made one on my lathe in the time it took to walk back in the house and order one.

You can really dress this bike up due to it not having too crazy of a parts range. Lots of cross yamaha availability and 31mm forks are not out of the norm.

But my best advice is ditch the tank if you want cafe. MY tank is a seriously modded Suzuki gt380 tank.

I plan on getting a different tank. I saw on your build Cosworth how you modified your tank, and it looks great! My plan is to change the seat, tank, install a kickstart, new handle bar ( I'm thinking a drag type handlebar or clip ons), new controls and new speedo and lights. Probably new foot pegs the chunky rubber ones are an eye soar. And of course paint I got a lot of work I want to do but I can see how I want the bike to look in my mind and can't wait to get it there.

Got my brothers wedding this week so not much work getting done on the bike but next week I'm will be ordering some parts so more work is on the way.

Desmobro - I hadn't really thought about selling the luggage box but it is pretty cooland I think it's a pretty rare find.. I do know you can get a 12 pack of bottled beer in there perfectly!
