Suzuki GS model differences

Hello, new here with a question on what the difference is between the 550 L and any other model. Is it pretty extensive (frame) or just a matter of different seats and tanks?
 
Every year / model is different in some way. Just "how" different depends. Have you looked around on the GSResources yet? They could tell you exactly what will fit.

Well I'm looking at a '81 550L and searching around the web it may seem that the "E" model may be the one to have. I was just wondering if the only difference was in aesthetics between the two but I'll definitely check GSResources out, thanks!

My GS-750 "Overkill" in my sig is an "L" model. If I remember right from when I was doing the research the longer rake of the cruiser model was obtained by 3 things.
Leading axle fork lowers
Triple tree angle
Neck rake built into the frame
Whether or not it is the same on your 550 I am not sure, but those are the things I'd check. Now thats not to say you can't café an "L" with those parts or swap parts from an "E" but it will change the rake and trail. Not necessarily a bad thing but it will change.
The E tank should fit on the L frame if you like it's shape better. But I kept mine because it fit the "Bratstyle" look I was going for.

 
The L, T, and E models have essentially the same frames. A couple of differences in the tank mounts (T and E have vertical bolt mounts, L is horizontal) The swing arm is also slightly different, though interchangeable. The biggest difference would be the tanks. The E tank is an obvious gem for the cafe racer build, although the T tank is a larger tank and sits nice and flat across the front end without that horizontal lean. My biggest drawback to my L-model cafe conversion was the cast wheels, but I found a set of larger, spoked T wheels that fit without any modification other than the rear hub. Overall, great bikes. If you're planning on doing any sort of major conversion, I think most GS enthusiasts would encourage you to chop the heck out of an L model.
