Suzuki GS1000gl bogging out when in gear and accelerating?

It's normal when a valve is running hot and you have an air leak.
Pretty stupid of me, one of the biggest issues with all the GS range had was tight exhaust valves ::)
You probably need a valve adjustment, the clearance is only 0.001"~0.003".
It's the easiest shim motor ever built, just get the special tool to depress buckets (The hardest part is removing 8 screws and 24 bolts)
Shims are available at any Suzuki dealers, they still used in the GS500 twin

I'll let it slide this time peter, lol. Ugh, i just hope its easier than it sounds cuz I've been wrenchin allday and I learned 5 or 6 things today. Now its time to drink enough beer to forget 5 or 6 things I dont need to know anymore ;D

It is.
The exhaust bolt is usually a PITA, done thousands of them, almost 'clocked' a salesman because he was telling people we would do free fitting on 4:1 exhaust systems, usually it's the bolts next to frame that snap.
One GS850G needed engine removed to drill out broken bolts (there were 'issues' ;) )

Yep right next to the frame where you can't really get a vise grips on it but will attempt tomorrow. If that doesn't work i'll try an easy out. If that doesn't work I'll drill and tap it.

Don't bother with the 'easy (fuckin snapped) out' just drill it out and go back to stock size

Well I broke down and took it to a suzuki dealer, Wow what a joke. They did manage to file something away in the clutch housing and now the clutch hooks up nicely but when i picked it up it was dragging. They said it needed a new clutch basket and that the shaft mat be bent, lol. 20 minutes of toying with the cable and its like new again. They synced the carbs but did not even try to fix the problem i took it there for which is the bogging out, Never again! So tonight i took the stock main jets to work and drilled them out with a 5/64 bit cuz it was the smallest one i could find. Amazingly it almost fixed the problem. The bike is completely responsive on the bottom end now but once you start hitting the higher rpms it boggs out in the same fashion. Did i go too big now?Luckily a guy at work has this kit that allows you to up the jets one size at a time in similar fashion to a tap. Thoughts

5/64" is probably close to a 200 main jet (too big)
Internet has been 'broken' since Monday

Most of the 80-83 bigger GS bikes (750-1100) have the mikuni CV carbs, I am assuming yours does as well. They can be a bit finicky if they have not been cleaned and rebuilt. If you have had the valve lash adjusted I would strongly suggest pulling the carbs apart and replacing all the o-rings and getting a rebuild kit for it. Also on the intake boots does yours have a o-ring between the boot and the head, if so if that has not been replaced I would suggest that as well.

Another question, is it a stock airbox and exhaust or aftermarket? If it has pods they are extremely temper-mental, I am dealing with this on my GS750 and require constant tinkering to get them right.

Sorry for the double post I wanted to make sure to get you this website as it has a lot of good info for the GS motorcycles.

Yep, Mikuni CV
Carbs have been cleaned and modified to run K&N filters
Valve adjustment is pretty critical on GS as it's only 0.001"~0.003", earlier pics show exhaust is 'hot' probably because of tight tappet
Not sure if shop did valve adjustment?
They should have before even attempting to sync carbs(and compression/leak down tests)
No point getting clutch 'fixed' when there are other issues that need addressing first.

Fully agree with that, if they didn't do a valve lash check that would be the first thing I would do and go down the line from there once sorted out. I had a few running issues when I rebuilt my GS750 close to 5 years ago, after doing the valve adjustment it ran like a brand new bike. Now that I am doing my pod set up I figure it's worth checking to make sure it is still good, so I am right there as well just for different reasons.

No valve adjustment was done, they seemed to be more interested in keeping my bike there as long as possible to rack up the bill. I put over 300 miles on her today and even though I am aware my jetting job was pretty backwoods and it's getting too much gas now, it ran great! Headin north tomorrow.

It was mentioned that the motor probably had a big bore kit or other mods done to it due to the amount of power it has. Considering the fact that I'm running close to a 200 main jet with minor top range fouling I kind of have to agree when the stock motor plus pods calls for a 125 main jet. If i bring the other set of jets i have up to about 150 and just go from there I think I will have it running beautifully. Since there is only about a month or two left of riding left here in WI I will take her to a much more knowlegdeable person than the factory techs to inspect the clutch and running issues when the fall rut begins. I really do appreciate all the help I have been getting on this issue so thanks to all. I just wanna go fast, lol.

Could easily be a 1000 or bigger?
Get a valve cover gasket and do tappets yourself, I can talk you through it.
As I said before, the hardest part is getting the cover off.
BTW, one 360 carb is lovely, the other still giving me problems.
Several weeks soaking in diesel worked on stuck pilot
I WILL fix it :D (ain't getting beaten by inanimate object ;) )
BTW
fit a fork brace

Peter you're the best! Now that I can actually take the suzuki for a ride I am at bliss. I was meaning to make a front fork brace and it kinda slipped my mind. Luckily there is a whole pile of half inch aluminim out in the scrap bin at work and might take a walk over this afternoon and grab some. And you are right the valves probably need to be addressed and doing it myself is the best way.

I ran into a guy today at this steam engine show that has (3) honda 360 parts bikes. What was the jet or jets you need again? He also has a 360T for sale kick only ready to roll for $650, oh man wish i had the funds. Also a guy just posted a 77 cb550 ss for $200 on craigslist which might be coming home. Sorry don't worry Peter I'm gonna keep you busy and just keep makin love to my cl carbs til they come around.

Hi Brad,
You'll need one of these
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Motion-Pro-Valve-Shim-Tool-Suzuki-Yamaha-08-0017-GS550-GS750-GS850-GS1100-/170898655914?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item27ca5a8aaa&vxp=mtr
You'll also need shims but don't buy any until you know what sizes are in there now.
They are exactly the same as GS500 twin so any Suzuki dealer will have them.
This is what they look like, this is probably close to the size you need, don't even think about the thick ones on eBay, I've never used anything over 275 (2.75mm thick)
They are case hardened so you can't thin them down (just in case you have a surface grinder in work and thouht you could save http://www.ebay.com/itm/SUZUKI-GS-1100-GS-550-GS-750-GS-850-VALVE-SHIM-2-65mm-/221087692124?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3379da755c&vxp=mtr
