Suzuki GS550 oil leak. Oil overflow?

I have a great runner Gs550. Just leaking a minimal amount . After checking the oil level it is way too full, is there possibly an overflow that is giving me the oil leak ? Is head gasket replacement a huge job?

Thanks any info appreciated.

Does your oil smell like gasoline at all? The vacuum petcock on the GS bikes are known to fail, causing gasoline to overflow from the carbs and into the crankcase.

No. I dont smell gas in the oil. It seems to have stopped leaking quite a bit now. I can almost live with it. thanks

I know its been a while, but I figured I'd jump in and run a question by everyone. I have a small oil leak that drips just behind the kickstand. I was told its a seal that needs to be replaced. Being relatively new, looking for suggestions/resources. Its pretty minimal, but would like to fix it up. (Sorry for the thread jack)

I haven't had a chance to get in there yet, but I'm told the seal that needs to be replaced is behind that cover. Was planning on having someone take a look at it, but if its something I can do myself I figure why not. Its been a hectic past couple weeks so I hadn't had the time to dig into anything yet

I think there's 3 seals behind the sprocket cover?

And I think all 3 can be replaced without taking the motor out of the frame. Is your bike a 550E (chain drive)? Probably the shifter shaft seal if so.

I have a 81 GS550L (chain drive). Where is the best place to obtain such seals? I have a clymer's manual on its way so I'm hoping that should help.

If you haven't already, sign up at the GSResources. They have lists of vendors and suppliers, along with every detail to swap out any leaking seal.
