Swap a 400t Engine to a 400A Hondamatic

Hey all,

New motorcycle guy here, just bought a '78 Honda cb400A Hondamatic a month or so ago. It's in great shape and I'm pumped but, there's one thing, its an automatic, with its two speeds of dismal glory and everything.

I've been browsing eBay and craigslist and I've seen a couple of CB400t Hawk engines for sale. Does anyone know how much of a plug-n-play process it would be to swap one in? Both of the engines look very similar. I'm not worried how difficult it will be, I just don't want to fabricate or weld a new frame or anything like that.

Thanks for any info on this!

Jeremy.

If both engines look similar enough ....I don't see why not, It may help to download the work shop manual of each just to be sure. But it sounds like it would be easily done if it didn't fit you may just have to move a bracket or 6, not weld a new frame

You'd probably be better off just selling the Hondamatic and buying a 400t.

You'd only be devaluing what you have by making a frankenbike out of it.

The motors will swap easily enough, but I agree with hillsy, for the effort and expense you're probably better off just buying a 400T.
