Tank dilema (repair the old, or dump it)

Bonehead

I am wrong... A lot. Don't worry, I know
So, I have the original tank for my bike (1982 gs650G) and took it to the body shop my boss uses. He said it was pretty fucked, and would cost just as much to fix it as it would to buy a new tank. So here lies my dilema: Do I abandon my old tank and get a new one from say DCC or try repairing it? Also, what are other options to replacing it with a brand new one? I want to try to keep it stock-ish looking, but am open to other ideas. Any less expensive ideas would be welcome as well haha

the tanks DCC sells are fiberglass tanks, and they won't be pre-fit to your bike. Either buy a decent used tank on ebay that fits, or have a badass custom tank made.

I'd go with the used route myself. Something about a fiberglass gas tank doesn't sit right with me personally. I'm always one of those "what if you lay the bike down, crack open the fiberglass, and spray gas everywhere possibly igniting things?" type. At least steel will often bend before it breaks.

Thanks guys. Went on the hunt for one on eBay and within 10 minutes... Bought this beauty for $100. scratches and whatnot, but no dents from what I can see, and about straight as an arrow. Also, it has the tank emblems that I didn't have before which are hopefully metal so I can dump them in the acid and powdercoat them. I also have the cap and a brand new petcock just waiting ;)

Yes. Most emblems I've seen have been pretty soft. Sand would destroy them.

hmm never thought about that tbh. Thanks for the heads up though! I can take it to our media blaster the next time I make a run and just sneak it in with the other stuff getting beaded.
