Tank inspired CB750 Mod

Coast to Coast
Planning a few simple mods not really a build....

A few years ago while cruising CL for a café candidate I ran across a 1971 CB750k1. 40,000 miles, well maintained by the second owner since about 1,500 mile. He had Accessorized it in all it “Early 70’s Glory” complete with Vetter Fairing , Vetter Saddle bags, Chrome Luggage Rack/ Back Rest and Stepped King/Queen Seat. With the Like new Original seat that had been saved.

After stripping it back to its original naked form, Fluids/Tuning/Synch and cleaning, it turned out to be a very clean bike. I sold off the Vetter Touring Stuff to re-coup my investment, to almost nothing on the original purchase price for the bike.

Other than the following below, the bike IMO, is pretty original. I could not bring my self to molest it. I went back to CL to resume the search for a twin as I had originally wanted, and just enjoyed the CB750 “as” is for a couple years.

NOT ORIGINAL
Tank, Headlight, Headlight Ears and Side Covers being painted silver and striped to match the Vetter accessories

Koni Rear Shocks

re-spliced/shortened turn Signal Wires (soldered and shrink tubing)

Chrome Engine Baskets

(FORGIVE THE IDIOT SITTING ON THE BIKE)

Enter the tank, I picked up this tank and from what I can tell is an un-authorized copy of the street version of the Japauto Race Tank used to win the 1972 Bol D’or. Copied and sold by “Greasy" Dick of Dick’s Cycle West in the mid 70’s.

In researching the tank I ran across the following bike, what appears to be a pretty stock CB750 simple café done with a few Japauto Street parts. The more I look at it the more I like it. Simple but Improved, Racy but retains a vintage look. Worthy of my CB750K1 “Survivor”. I like the Original fenders and pipes contrasted with the race tank. If I do it right, I can always “Reverse Bolt On” it back easily. I may even have the the original body work repainted in an original and packed/saved away.

So the vision now is a Simple Street mod of my CB750K1 “Survivor”.
The DCW Tank, Simple Honda Wing Logos
A Similar café or Low Profile 2 passengerrider “Brat” style seat.
Low Euro Bars or Flat Drag Bars
Chrome Original Style Ears Or Painted to match
Another set of Side Covers smoothed of badges, Simple Honda Wing Logos.
Addition of Second Front Disc & Caliper up front.
Tapered Stem Bearings.
Rebuild Front Forks.
Swing Arm Bushings if Necessary
Mecahanical & Cosmetic Refresh of Small Parts

I have some PayPal burnin a hole in my pocket, so I checked on ebay for possible seats. I am curious of opinions...

I am leaning towards ("D") the Flat Brat Style...Simple cut and paste below with the seat mounted and some possible Honda Logos)

It also looks to me as though another stock Caliper could be flipped and remounted on the Right Other Side for Dual Calipers, since there are mounts on the lower legs. It also looks like the hub as a cover over a possible second disc mont on the opposite side of the hub. I Did exactly that with a Kawi H2 in college. Also found a Hydraulic "T" from a later model bike that mounted just the same as the Single Connector/Brake Sensor block did on the lower Triple Tree, ANY THOUGHT on Dual Conversion on K1? any leads before I search the heck out of it?
The Idea is Keep it Running, Trade Bolt on new Parts, Kepp Original OLD parts.

That tank is sweet!! It's very similar to the one on my build. With how "thin" it looks I'd want to see a very minimal tail on the bike.

And you're on track for the dual disc conversion. I do remember reading about an offset problem do to the hub width on early 750s. Something along the lines of 4mm difference at the rotor mounting flange on the hub. Nothing that couldn't be overcome though.

Great idea for a project, and I have to give a big thumbs up to the brat seat. It just works...and it looks good and retro.

As far as the dual disk conversion, it isn't complicated. You do have to modify (as mentioned before) for the offset, and you also have to take into account the loss of the speedometer. There have been adapters made for just this conversion. I have seen them over on SOHC4. I'll see if I can dig something up. A good alternative is to use GL1000 parts. They came stock with the dual disks, the 19" wheels, and the correct speedo drive and spacers. I believe that they will bolt up to the 750K forks. The first two year GL1000s are what you want, they used the 19" spoke.

Thanks Dyrden & Kanticoy for the confirmation of the Disc Brakes. If I remember correctly I had to do a very minor mod to the H2 mount when I did it.

Yea I'm feelin' the flat seat, the more I look at it the more I like it. Just a simple ebay seat but it just seems to work & go with the simple retro look. I like the stitch pattern vs a simple pleated one. I also like how the stitching design in the back kind of compliments the lines in the tank.

B is closer to the style of modified bikes of that era and is more in keeping with a Japauto look, but the seat is a very personal style issue.

I agree a More "Cafe" Seat would be staying true to the Race heritage of the tank design, But here ismy thinking:

Not building a Japauto "Tribute" Bike and Dont really like the Original design of race seat with tank.

By the mid-70's the Japauto Parts & Kits had been Copied and Diluted down to a version of the tank sold with a pocket to accept the original seat. Ultimately copied by Dick's Cycle West and distributed through ads in Motorcycle Magazines for young ment to Dream & Drool over.

I want a 2 seat Bike out of this CB750, and the soft bump versions would have allowed me to still have this, but again I am not trying to even build a faithful japauto street version, More what a kid may have put together back then, a simple bolt on "sleek or retro" with a Euro bad boy touch?

I have pulled the trigger on the seat....So I hope I like it.

A couple other looks with this tank. The first one doesn't actually exist as far as I know, it is a pic of a model.

Yea, to have a true Dresda.....I did see a "Feather Bed" inspired build including the frame, somewhere on here I think, that seemed to be turning out very nice.

I'm sorry to hear that man. I'm sure someone on here will snatch it up - its a great looking piece.

Thanks ...yea had to face some realities....too many projects ....not enough Time & Money.

Once I get the Starter Valve Lever that is missing from the CR29 Carbs I have, I will be listing them as well.
