Tappet Loosening on its Own

Sorry, I have to disagree with you.
Majority of parts on old Honda's had a 100,000 mile design life.
If correctly serviced at regular intervals even the pistons and rings will last for that mileage.
If operated at high rpm for extended periods, the piston rings only last about 10~30,000 miles (from experience and dealer workshops)
The only time there are real issues is through total neglect - quite common in USA where motorcycles are seen as toys or 'not a Harley' and 'disposable Jap crap'

PJ....you know me and my not like me (I think you don't) from The SOHC forum but I respectfully disagree with you. I make the Big Bore Billet blocks from a 75 lb chunk of aluminum for CB750's and have ported hundreds of heads and built engines 750/550 engines with 750 engines that make over 100 HP on pump.
That DOHC "know it all" Dbag that says I have "limited" experience shows what assumption will get you. Geez ...I built the street Drag Champ of Finland his GS 1500cc head as well as the Canadian Vintage 550 class champs head. But I don't know shit.
Whether it is total neglect or whatever the reality exists and I have seen hundreds of worn out top ends.
Anyway....you fella's can think whatever you want. I have work all the time.
I do work with special needs kids too as an occupational therapist as I went to college....reading that fella DOHC posts makes me feel like I am back on the clock.

Just going to ignore Tim for now ;)
Yep, I remember now you reminded me 8)
The rubber parts are always the first things that fail, the cam chain 'tensioner' has always been a crappy design and execution (I think the only one Honda ever got right was the 1965 S90, it had oil assist 40 yrs before the 'super-sport' 190mph stuff out since 2004~5) The valve stem seals pretty much always need replacing after 40 yrs ;D
I have a CB350 f motor on the shelf here, hole in case where rod snapped

also other damage from being 'bounced around' for unknown amount of time before I got hold of it

Tappets loosening off are very unusual if they were correctly set and lock nuts tightened.
The oval holes are easy enough to spot as the adjuster screw can be 'rocked' back and fore when locknut is loose.
In my experience it was way more common on the 3 valve 250 motors as they got more abuse than just about anything else I ever worked on (the CB/CM400~450 usually didn't get so badly beat up, although I did see a few where cranks had snapped between main bearings)

.
Damn...I gotta check the site out more often...this is way better than Saturday Nite Live.

Honda had a recall on the cam chain guides for the one of the years of CB 350's like maybe 1975, and the shop I worked at installed lots of them.

That's CB360s. The "hook" on the end of the tensioner was reversed in the recall version.
