Tapping a gas tank to make a level indicator?

Fear My Twin

Chicks hate my bike.
Like in the picture attached, can I just drill a hole, tap it, and use pipe thread tape on some nipples/ 90's/ and barbs?

Is it that easy? Or do I need to weld on some bungs and what not?

I wouldn't trust the thickness of the sheet metal to hold in a couple of 90's, but it's up to you.

You'll want to empty it out and fill it with water a few times to get the fuel out.

What bike is that in the pic? Just interesting enough to catch my attention..

I've welded on tanks before. Pour a bottle of simple green in the tank and fill the rest up with water. Let it sit overnight. That should really do it, but if you're reall paranoid, run a few helium balloons through the petcock or balancing tube to get a bunch of helium in there. Then weld away.

The bike pictured is a CB125 screen shot from a youtube movie. Search cb125 cafe racer.

The guy spent 2 yeaers building it. Very good work it appears, but slow as balls lol.

the method i use to "safen up" a gas tank came from a guy who does it for a living. that said a bunch of big foreheads on the net have flamed me for this method - their choice I suppose. but i've used it 3-4 times with no problem.

remove the cap and petcock - reverse your shop vac - stick the nozzle in the filler hole & let it run for 20 minutes. Done.

You don't need to weld anything. You need a bulkhead fitting, something like this:

or

That's what it looks like the guy in the video's using. The bitch of it will be tightening the nut from the inside of the tank. How are you at training gerbils to use hand tools?

Everytime I think I have perfected a skill I find another I need to learn

Thanks for the idea, I forgot about bulk head fittings, of course he custom fabbed the tank so i doubt he had to train any gerbils. lol
