Tell Me What ya think? My 71 CB350 cafe project!

bp - great idea, i like it as long as the seat will be thick enough to sit comfortably.

i wonder if to lock the rear quickly, some spring buttons would work, like on pop up tents etc...
amazon has em. "snap buttons"
this place has all the sizes and kinds explained. http://www.valcocleve.com/snap-button-a.htm

This whole thread about the telescoping/transforming cowl is awesome. I hope it moves forward, because I think quite a few people may be interested in this kind of thing. I have tossed the idea around in my mind for awhile, but I am not far enough in my bike's resurrection to get serious or put anything on paper. I'll be watching...

I like the idea with the sliding tracks, but I think the biggest question is how to securely fasten it...
IMO I think that a pin system would work best.

  • Ok so here is a few things I've done lately on the bike:

    -Sandblasted the frame and motor.
    -Repainted the motor
-Welded up the telescoping seat cowl frame.
-Welded up the rear fender and electronics box.

Here are a few pics of the motor and frame being sandblasted and the motor painted.

Take your time and prep the surfaces right that way you can be proud of the final result. Trust me it's worth it!

Oh and just to explain the details of how my seat works. The seat doesn't actually move. I think the following video might help clear some up, but the main idea is that the seat cowl simply slides back and forth(locking in each position) to reveal more of the seat for the 2 person position and less of the seat for the single rider. The cowl hovers over the seat but is attached to the drawer slider below the seat. I know it's confusing to explain, but soon, very soon I'll have the seat done and will post a complete video. For now, here is the welded up telescoping seat cowl frame, long name. So far that is...

FZR400/600 used to come with a seat cowl cover so that they could change from solo to two up in about 30 seconds. To adapt that idea, the seat foam would be stepped and the cowl cover would slide over the foam and attach to the seat sides. On modern bikes the foam is barely 1" thick compared to old bikes with 3 or 4 inches of foam.

On my RZ the PO had a custom Corbin seat made and it looks like a cafe style with bump at the rear, but that's foam and I could take a passenger any time with zero changes. That's two simple alternatives.

Hey guys, I know it's been a few weeks, but I have been working on the bike and telescoping seat cowl. I haven't had much time to post videos, but I have been making em along the way so they are coming. For now I can post some pics with a short video.

My seat will be covered and padded bc I will be riding it...ALOT! this summer. So comfort is a priority. It'll be prolly 2" thick and black with a racing strip down the center in the stitching, not very noticeable, but classy ya know. I am currently working on the pins I am using for the locking pin system. I will make a video when I'm done.

So far my color I am planning on painting the tins is a mega silver flake, like bass boat silver flake with a single with thin side strips racing strip like a mustang cobra style kinda. It'll look cool. Oh and I designed a honda cafe emblem for it to. I'll post those too. So heres the pics and video:

Got the motor back in the frame and started putting it all back together!!! This part went pretty fast.

Placed the exhaust in place. For the exhaust I'm just using a reducer backwards and a exhaust tip i bought at autozone for $10. Once the black exhaust wrap is on it'll look sweet. I'll wrap it and leave the chrome tip like 8"

Oh yeah and i got the sweet napolean mirrors in with my lever set!!!

Ha! I didn't even see this til now. Looks good though!

If you pm a moderator (Tim moves stuff all the time, but I think any of them are capable) they can get it done.

God... I've been waiting for you to update this thread! Been really curious as to the progress of the extendable cowl!!

Looks great my friend, looks really good. Haven't got through all your videos yet but will as soon as I get a lil bit of me time tonight!

Keep it up!

Sounds like your only firing off 1 cylinder. Simple fix, adjust timing first, then sync carbs. Syncing the carbs will solve that without a doubt. Just need to get yourself a carburetor sync tool if you dont have one already. Otherwise looks good!

Hey BP, how's the project coming? You got that cb350 from my friend Mark over in KC KS... Let me know if you're needing any parts, I have some extra 350 stuff.
