The bike Honda never built - or, my MR250 Elsinore for the Vintage 1000

Tic Toc. It'll be a shame to get all this together and then realize you don't have a seat... Oh, wait...

Ha, I'm not above layering outdoor carpet under duct tape and coffee sack in true #sadhandie ninja fashion!

Made some pins to hold the side covers on today. If I looks had I'm sure I could've found some oem rubber bands, but I figured I like this better.

Need 4, so roughed them in back to back.

And test fitting

After this I back cut the heads to get closer and added an o ring cushion. Still gotta tap the back and make a retainer, but this is all the front will show.

Done yet? :p

Of course! I'm just sandbagging.

here's one of the last things I did for it (I actually took pics)

XR200 Air filter Mod.

So, Good luck trying to buy a MR250 Air filter anywhere. I tried. I hear they come up in Australia once in a while, but I dont have time to wait on the next haley's comet for one to reveal itself. I didnt want to go with a pod type either because, well, the snorkel box is one of the perks to having a bike like this. So I bought a Uni XR200R filter, and cut a round rod with flats on the end and a 6mm hole thru the center like this:

Welded it in at the holes i drilled in the box, and also on the inside around the flats. Then popped the filter in and tightened up with a handy 6mm shcs.

Skills E, skills!
Nice progress.
BTW, Haley's comet is due in 2060, 45 years from now. It's got a very predictable orbital travel of every 75 years. I was 9 years old the last time it passed by.

I like the airbox digs, pretty sweet that the elsinore has a metal airbox. No idea what I'll do yet on the XL the inside of the airbox was a rodent hotel and all the innards were extra rotted.

Thanks yall. The end of the airbox story is that I have managed to find a "proper" one, but it's $29 plus shipping and subject to randomly disappear from inventory, so whatever. I dont have to worry about finding an air filter again.

So here's the rest of the progress for tonight. Would be a lot farther but the wiseco piston set I bought came with the wrong size rings. Joke's on me this weekend.

Some wiring bits, a tail light and fender cobbled together, finished the headlight, airbox installed and some padding under the tank.

Me too. Oh well, I also realized Im short a muffler too so there's that to figure out. And yeah, stock ones are hens teeth, so no danger of following that resto rule either. Somewhere a purist is massacring kittens and puppies over these crimes I'm sure.

what kind of silencing do you desire ?

Not entirely sure. I had hoped to get a supertrapp cobbled together out of some parts I have. but the shell I have is a bit beyond rehab I think. Im mostly after something that will fit, and not sound bad enough that others consider killing me in my sleep at night on the ride. I've got a pile of 4 wheelers i can dig thru this weekend that I'll see about. I also need to find a rear sprocket too. If I'm understanding right, an XL250/350 rear sprocket will fit but isnt dished like the original on here. That doesn't really bother me tho, I can add metal to things. Also, the piston vendor has the right rings in the mail to me today, so hopefully before the weekend I can have that all taken care of.

If a 74 CR250 rear sprocket is the same as a 76 rear sprocket, theres a 48 tooth on ebay right now in Oregon. Stock calls for a 47 tooth, but I can also use a XR200R front sprocket to play around with ratios there. The bolt pattern is the hurdle i need to get over.

If it's the same as the 350/250, I put a JTR1977.48 on and it fits perfect. 6x8.5mm holes, center hole 130mm I believe. Punch that part number in on JT sprockets website and the dimensions will come up

I've got that extra sprocket we talked about (JTR245-2-49) off my bike. If you want it, it is yours.

Awesome, thanks I'll check and see what I can do there. The only problem will then be spacing it a little for proper alignment.

And Mike, the xr200r rear sprockets won't work on this :-/

You can also call up JT sprockets, they're moderately helpful If you have the measurements, they can search their database and find a part that works.
