The "Bomber" GL1100 project - added video

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

You're probably better off Staffy - some of these pics might make you trade in that CX for a Wing!

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

Nah mate, the Bastardwing is halfway there i ain't trading shit!! :D

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

Tonight made some decent progress. I pulled the old valve covers off the engine that I used to mask the heads for painting and set the valve lash to spec.
( .004 Int and .005 exh). Then I put the covers back on to keep things nice and clean.
Raised the engine off the stand with a come-a-long and lowered it onto the dolly I made close to the height of the frame.

Here is the bare dolly, 3/4 plywood and a set of 6" castors from work

Covered the dolly with a rug and set the engine on it.

Then pulled the left side removeable frame section and rolled the engine into place, she's all lined up and about 1/2" low. The exhaust studs just cleared the frame on the right side on the way in. ;D
Once I get the upper mounts painted I can install them then bolt in the right side, then lift the left side a little into position and tighten everything down.

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

More good news is when I checked my e-mail just now, I see my Pay-pal transfer is finally complete so now the carb kits get ordered!!!!

Gee, they weren't serving beer and pizza today while I got things done on the 550. Finally got a chance to read your build post - Awesome, a GL!

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

Lookin good Hoosier, bet you can't wait for the first ride. I am just heading out the door for a ride on my big girl. I haven't had a chance to do any more work, but I have put about 1000KM's on her. Wish i had a garage like you so I could do the exact same tear down and freshen up. I like the bike so much I want it to last at least another 30 years. Hope the bud and pizza fueled you up enough to get a bunch done.

Cheers,

Maritime

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

Twas a good day / night. I came in about 7:00 and took a "Power nap" till 10:00 then headed back out into the garage till 3:00am... Bachelor hours! ;D

-Engine is in! I haven't tightened all the mounting bolts because the case protectors use two of them and I don't want to install those just yet.
-Seat foam is cut and glued to the pan in the flat sections, 2" where your bum is, 1" everywhere else.
-Fabbed up the rear mounting bracket for the seat.
-Bought 1 3/4" O.D. exhaust pipe for the Sportster muffler adapters, may need to tweek the angle a little
-Pulled the radiator, fan, shroud off the shelf and degreased then washed with the hose... still need to repaint.
Hmmm, those shelves are getting empty.
Still need to pull the wheels (again) and remove the tires, paint the Comstars silver w/clearcoat, and put new tires on.
Rebuild rear Master Cyl as it won't release. Rear caliper is done
Mount the tail light and turn signals.
Still sanding the timing belt and valve covers to polish, down to 800 wet now.
Complete the wiring reconnection and squeeze it all into the headlight
AND do the carbs, thinking the Memorial weekend for that little project.
Ordered some different turn signals, cast aluminum mini's from DCC... those chromed plastic catseyes I bought off e-bay looked "cheap", so they are going on the "Lil Sister".
She got some attention also, check out that thread for updates.

Sure have Joe, stock height on the air shocks is 13" you can get 12", 11 1/2" or 11" eye to eye heavy duty cruiser rear shocks in either air or springs.
Seen 'em on e-bay for $100 in black or the price goes on up with chrome springs, chrome bodies etc. Never really sure on the quality though so I'd stick with a name brand.
If you want to keep the air suspension I'd go with the Progressive 416's , or you can go with a spring style a set 420's or of 412's like these from OBB http://www.oldbikebarn.com/Progressive-412-Heavy-Duty-aluminum-11-1-2-shocks?sc=2&category=21

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

Can only get to the Buffing wheel on Thursday nights for the timing and valve covers so in the mean time I been working on the seat.
I got 1" high density foam and cut a piece to cover the whole thing but decided I need some smaller pieces of it for where it counts for me and momma.

Then used some industrial contact adhiesive and stuck it all together with the help of a shitload of clamps...

I got the black vinyl just need to get out the hairdryer and stretch it on. Problem is I am on the fence on how to attach it underneath. More contact adhiesive, glass in some wood strips and staple it, or pop rivets and washers... maybe the wood strips, staple WITH contact adiesive for good measure.

Oh, and I got more parts painted... Radiator shroud and pieces.

Re: The "Bomber" my GL1100 project

I was wondering when we were gonna get some progress pics.....
