The Freddy Spencer Challenge: awesome motorcycle.

Weak.

In 1985 a similar F1 car would catch Freddie on his bike as well.

Sepang, Malaysia:
Montoya in Williams BMW F1 - 1:34.223
V Rossi on Yamaha - 2:01.833

Catalunya, Spain:
M Schumacher in Ferrari - 1:17.245
S Gibernau on Honda - 1:42.450

Unfortunately no-one has pitted the modern GP race bike vs the modern F1 car. Personally, I like F1 better than Moto GP.

A little bit of research showed that although at the pinnacle of technology 4 wheels are faster than 2, for $10,000 you can buy a motorcycle that will spank most cars 10x or 20x its price.

It is still a pretty close contest, though. The March 2011 edition of Motor Cyclist Magazine does a comparo run between a Duc 1198S and a Ferrari 458 Italia. They were running at Willow, and the Duc beat the Ferrari in both the drags and the track lap times. But the bike/ car argument is pretty murky, since their strengths are at such different spectrums.
For reference, the Ferrari recorded a 3 second flat 0-60, whereas the Duc managed a 2.7. Lap times were close, too with the Ferrari at 1.22.32, and the Ducati at 1.19.3. As you say, prices ranged widely from $21,795 MSRP for the Ducati, to $287,654 for the Ferrari! Obviously, both are production street machines. Steve Rapp ran the Ducati, and Justin Bell drove the Ferrari, so they were not amateurs in the respective areas.

Like I said before, though. Since the applications of each are so varied, a head to head is not really an argueable point. I just think it is really cool to see real footage of Freddy tearing it up!! ;D

Oh, but cool video. There is no question that an F1 car will smoke a motorcycle in a flat out race! The bike simply does not stick well enough!

pheller.... very true....

but for every dollar you save by buying that motorcycle you better make up for 10 fold in courage to bring it up to the same speeds as the 4 wheeled "equivalent"

As a kid I watched from the infield as Freddie won the 1985(?) Daytona 200 Superbike race. The Wheelie King Doug Domokos(RIP) wheelied around the entire track as an exhibition stunt. I don't know if they still allow it, but back then we brought our motorhome in and rode our dirtbikes around the infield. You could start at the chicanes in the infield and then go right up next to the high banks where they were hitting 150+ and keep track of the riders. It was pretty insane! Freddie and Doug were the top dogs back then in their respective fields. I'm lucky to have experienced Daytona Bike Week as a 13yo with a passion for cycles.
