Been Around the Block
Heres the story:
A CB750 popped up locally for 1300. That is pretty cheap for a 750 around these parts, most people normally want at least 2k-3k which is crazy. This CB750 appeared to have the full treatment, polished tank, covers, carb bowls, clubmans, cafe seat, "race built motor", coils etc. It was said to have a clean title and ran good.
Obviously I had to jump on this deal, so I shot him an offer of 1000 for it thinking "well, he will probably say no but what the hell"
To my surprise he actually said yes, the kicker was that I had to catch a plane to LA the next morning, so time was super limited. I grabbed the cash and headed there.
It was pouring rain outside and storming, so there's a link in the story.
I get there, with all of about 15 minutes to give it the best up and down look that I can.
It looks as described, and he hands me the title that I quickly glance over and then put away. Later I will find out that the title is dirty as hell, is a north dakota title (I'm in missouri) and has been signed already not even in his name.
Then I give him the cash, and since it was storming outside just agree to at least see him fire it up. The battery in it is apparently toast, so he has to hook it up to a battery tender, but sure enough after two kicks it starts right up, and then dies. "These old bikes sometimes have to warm up first", A statement that I can definitely agree with, so I called it good and we load the sucker up.
A week passes, I get home from LA, and I bring the bike home. I go to try and start it with it hooked up to a charger, and proceed to kick it over for what had to be 20 minutes with it not starting whatsoever, I then give up and decide I will wait until I get a new battery.
Fast forward to today. I popped in a new battery, and after about 20 more minutes of kicking, I finally get it to start for a second while giving it tons of throttle but then it proceeds to die. This process goes on for an hour, and I was able to get it to start maybe 4 times.
I decide to investigate. I check 3 of the 4 plugs (I can't reach one of the plugs due to the frame) they all smell of gas and seem somewhat moist, but not soaked like I expected since I kicked the bike over for an hour. One of the plugs is cracked too.
I dug into the carbs and every jet except for one pilot jet is clean.
The plan:
Pursue a new title through the Vermont title process.
Replace the cracked plug.
Clean the one clogged jet.
Any other suggestions?
I can't handle kicking this thing over for 20 minutes at a time every time to get it to fire. This is a high compression motor and is a bitch to kick start. Lol.
