The last bike project, I promise honey.. CB550 1978

Man these pistons are small, good thing there are 4 of them. I had a bad exhaust valve so while I had the head off I figured I would do rings.

We had to get another head as there were too many wore out guides. The next head has one guide bad and oddly enough it was #2 exhaust..

Update on the head. I wasn't calling the shop as he must be busy with all the sleds right. I called only to find out he didn't like the second head but neglected to call me. So I ordered 4 exhaust guides and took it to the head shop to get them installed and assembled. Not that I am in a big hurry but I hope I know how it goes together 2 months after I took it apart.

Blah... The shop told me the guides were installed only to find out that two guides were 5mm as opposed to 5.5mm. Two installed fine, one got beat up attempting to install and one never got installed. So two more on order. This has been since December 12th, I can't believe this.

Well 2 additional guides arrived yesterday so up to the shop we went to beg the guy "Please fast track this thing, you have had it since March 1st" ok, will see...

Oh look what finally got done...
Going together with new gaskets, seals, rings and a rebuild head including 4 new guides. What to do with paint? Raw or painted cast aluminum? If painted what pieces do not get painted besides the two steel covers?

Nice work and bike! I have the same bike, so this is inspirational to see. Glad you finally got your engine back together. Have you thought of just polishing it? Maybe vapor blasting? Cheers, Matt

No on the polish. I had a jet boat in my youth and one winter I took the jet drive out and polished the entire assembly from the engine back. Too much work this late in the season. I sell dry ice and was thinking of having it blasted though.

I'm opting to powder my engine. The jugs and head will be black with polished fin edges and the crank case, cam cover, breather cover and all side covers will be black chrome with polished Honda logos. I'm mainly doing the jugs in black because I'm sick of having to clean between the fins all the time. Well, that and I think it looks pretty sick.

Hi, nice Bike,
how is the seat and tank attached to de frame?

thx.

The tank is stock, attaches with the stock rubber. The seat came with a bracket that bolts into two existing holes directly behind the tank and two studs into the stock bracket holes over the rear tire. This was truly a bolt together build. I did cut off the rear peg mounts as it was a single seat.

Sold this bike today. Adam came from Seattle and landed right in the middle of Hoopfest, very dedicated. Enjoy the bike Adam.
