The 'leftovers' project - XS650

Guys when i lace freshly powdered wheels, 2 layers of blue painters tape, come up from the back and punch holes in all the spoke sections... and lace away, take a few seconds to remove when the wheel is all laced up and fresh clean powder under it... i know "if an if where a fifth we would all be drunk" but for next time... i hate when people give me the IF YOU WOULD HAVE... after it is all said and done, but i knw this thread has allot of people watching it, and it is a good tip. to be honest when all is said and done, you will eb the only one that every notices! Get that compound i emailed you and you will get 90% of that out

Just some notes for myself on bearings:

Stock is 6202 35x15x11 sealed 2RS bearings

Need 35x17x11

6003 is 35x17x10 - good option possibly - might need a 1mm shim between bearing and inside of brake plate to maintain side load

63003 2RS is another option - 35x17x14 but might need to shave brake plate down to allow clearance inside drum unless the bearing will push in further and can shorten the spacer in between the two bearings or push the opposite side out 3mm (there is room).

Or turn the 17mm axle down to 15mm and have a 0.5mm sleeve made to work with the XS forks (which is only until I get the Voodoo front end).

Front wheel done :) Just took some coffee and a quiet room.

That looks sexy already. If I had any money I'd buy a Voodoo frame for the Honda Rebel I have sitting around.

Just gotta really stretch the projects out. I bought the frame in late January this year, and just did the wheels in the last few weeks/months (buying the wheels, ordering spokes, powder coating etc.)

Just bought a spare XS650 front end to mock it up with, but am hoping to get a Voodoo springer front end for it over this winter.

Dropped the wheels off with Mark for torquing / truing the spokes. Not something I'm experienced with. Will buy a wheel stand for my next set and give the whole enchilada a try myself - baby steps.

Hope to have rubber on them early next week and then the fun begins.

Got the wheels back and rushed to get the rubber mounted so I can get the frame up on 2 wheels.

Of course in my rush I forgot to have the rim-locks installed. These are old XT500 rims and have rim-lock holes in them. I figured I'd install them just 'because'. So one day I'll take the air out and see if I can slip them in or have the tires taken off to install them, but for now, focusing on mocking up the bike / adding things like footpegs, gas tank, seat, fender mounts etc.

I've got a spare XS650 front end in the garage but need the bearing races. It has an All Balls kit on the stem already but I didn't get the races with it. It has the cartridge emulators and fresh springs in it as well which is nice.

David at Voodoo is working on a springer front end - hoping to use that on this bike. Not sure I can actually lower the stock XS forks enough and have them actually function. But for mocking up I'll just slide them up through the trees.

Slapped the front end on quickly (grabbed the bearings I needed earlier from Flying Squirrel). This is more or less level - somehow I don't think an inch of front suspension travel is quite enough :)

I'm banking on David at Voodoo for a custom springer front end eventually, so this is really just for mocking up purposes - so I can straddle it and decide on seat / footpegs etc.

No doubt, and I've been watching / looking for a girder. But... impossible to find and incredibly expensive to have one made.

David's springer design is very minimalistic and streamlined. No big squared off Harley springer is going on this thing.

He recently modified a DNA springer. His springer design is narrower and has 2 nicely rounded sections like the front one he made for the DNA. And a single, simple small shock for the suspension.

So picture that with 2 narrower U shapes, and a single short shock that doesn't stick out the top.

Although he has made a turd of a springer look way better than it did, and it does have a real classic look to it. It would look nice on the frame, so that is an option.

It was also dramatically shortened - which I need for my frame.
