Like a graduation picture!

How's the riding position on that thing without rearsets?

Absolutely and completely terrible!!!

Re: **The locO leoN XS650 - Team Build**

Pretty soon we'll be able to do a side-by-side with our two alloy-tanked XS650's...

Re: **The locO leoN XS650 - Team Build**

IMO you should make up a new seat with a cowl to match that awesome tank.

Something like this.

Your taillight choice would also work better.........

Re: **The locO leoN XS650 - Team Build**

Any chance I could come over and spend a few moments "alone" with that bike? Beautiful.

LOL.. hey Jaeson.. how are you man??...

SO... the freakin Gear box blew on the bike.. must have broken a shifter fork!
what a pisser, especially after completely rebuilding the clutch basket, installing new plates, clutch springs, cush springs, new neeedle bearing & thurst washer, etc..etc...

Well.. thanks to Hal Reid for coming through with a strong running motor from a 75 xs650!!..
Now it sits on the operating table at the shop, as the bike gets prepared for a Motor transplant... Now I gotta pull out all the good shit out of the original motor and slap it on the 75 motor... Bummer...

Re: **The locO leoN XS650 - Team Build**

TRANSPLANT COMPLETE!!..

I pulled the motor out and put in a engine from a 75 xs650.. (Thanks to Hal Reid)....

xsmotorsurgery.jpg

in 5 hours I pulled the motor,... with Tony and LoveHertz's help lifting it out of the bike,... Put the new one on...
Reinstalled and retimed the Boyer, exhaust, carbs, chain, etc..etc...

Fired up no problem, with the stock 71 carbs!!..

Ran AWESOME....
TOok it out for a long ride then, flicked on the headlights then it died... (luckly 1km away from the house)...

Did the walk of shame back to the shop, Whipped out the volt meter then realize my battery was dead... :(

I boosted the battery and fired up and purred like a kitten.
The rotor/stator is not charging the battery.. :(

Gonna pull the rotor from the old motor and slap it in and see what happens...

what's on deck for the old motor?

Parts.. :(
It was a shame.. It always started on the first kick!!..

Already I've pulled the perfect clutch set up, the boyers etc..etc..
Now Im gonna pull the stator and rotor... I was thinking of eventually rebuilding the motor but now I doubt that will happen... :(

thats too bad :( wonder what caused it's demise

Well according to research on the xs forums and conversations with XS gurus...design flaws.. The xs1 & xs1b were the first of yamaha's XS models and a lot was learned from those ginnypig bikes..
1. The shifter forks in the gear box were made from a thinner metal and therefore got bent/warped much easier, especially when people stomped into gear.
- 74+ they changed the thickness/make up of the shifter forks
2. The clutch baskets in in the xs1 & xs1b did not have any alignment holes in the inner & outer plate and only come together properly ONE way from the factory..
- so you were screwed when you tried to change the plates and put the clutch pack back together. 99% of the time you'd end up with clutch chatter and mess up the fins between in the basket outer.
- Yamaha put alignment holes models 73 +
3. Also the clutch inner never got enough oil between the plates so 74+ they drilled holes in the inner for better oil circulation between the plates.
4. they changed the clutch push rod from 2 rod 3 ball bearing system to a 1 rod 2 ball bearing system 74+
5. The 34mm forks on the early models suck. The vibration on the forks ALWAYS caused the fork seals to leak. So the changed the forks to 35mm in later years.
There are many others issues...

There are many more apparently...
People loved teh look of the 70/71 model, but hated the engine problems.. So its pretty common to slap in a 75+ motor into the older frames...

Mine is a 73...so I have a lot of the same gripes. does your front wheel bounce quite a bit at stop signs?

yeah.. like a 5 yr old on a trampolene...mabe thats a slight exaggeration....hence I need to change my fork seals...
but thats gonna be a winter project...

Re: **The locO leoN XS650 - Team Build**

Well she's all back together again.
I just replaced the rotor & stator with the one from the old motor, I replaced the old rectifier and regualtor with a new one piece from Mikes XS and I put a fancy-shmancy LED Volt meter on the bike so I can monitor the charging of the battery as I ride..

Rides like and shifts like a dream!!

Re: **The locO leoN XS650 - Team Build**

congrats! the black jugs are great, I wondered how that would look. I like the look of the upswept Dunstalls much better now, seeing the bike out on the street. wish I could hear em.... and I wish they didn't sorta hide the lovely hammerheads. btw, how are those shox functioning for you? are they the $169. nos ones from e-pay, or older ones?

Thanks man.. the bike runs like a dream.. smooth shifting all through the gears and even when it gets hot, no problem finding neutral!
The Dunstalls are ok. If you remember, lilBeast chopped them to remove the baffles then re welded the tops back on again.
I do want to put on a set of Commando Pea-shooters on them.. That will be the next and last thing...

The Redwing Reverse-Hammer shocks are amazing. I got them brand new, (in other words, never used...I had to assemble them...) in the original box with new coils for $150 at a swapmeet.

Cheers!

Re: **The locO leoN XS650 - Team Build**

just some last pics, taken tonight (aug12/09), before we close off this build thread an move on to something else...

Took her for a long hard ride tonight on the street... (to see how whe would handle in traffic with previous overheating and shifting problems), and on the highway at 120hm/hr+
Other than the usual vibrations of an old twin, she performed like a dream...

Now that this build is officially done with nothing else to do on the bike... its time to focus on a new project... Something totally different...
