The maddest 19 year old here? 1966 BSA Hornet "Fighter"

Hmmm, give the22nd@hotmail.com a try :)

Thanks man. I was told by a mate of mine to just get rid of all the electrics and put in new modern stuff.

Thanks! ;D
That build is bloody nice! Are those the stock silencers? I need a pair for mine with a really loud, heavy grunt. Shame no silencers are illegal...

Yeah electronics is the bane of my existance.
The ironic thing is that I did electronic engineering in hight school and got top grades... ::)

Hey man, if it helps, look up 'Vargas Girls' or 'wwii bomber nose art' on google images, it may be the look you're lookin for with out worrying too much about what exact plane, era, etc. I once saw on an old Porsche 914 the bomber ticks which was pretty cool, too. It's just simply a symbol of something you'd want to bomb and 'ticks' of how many you have, you'll see it on the 'wwii bomber nose art' look up.

Hope this helps!!

Yeah, your coils are most likely not your problem. After you get the wiring sorted out you'll want to do some light maintenance on the points and auto advance unit to make sure they are in good order. I would highly recommend a Boyer Bransden ignition. Much, Much less maintenance required.

Thanks gehlsurf! Vargas has some amazing artwork!

triumphrider Thanks for the Boyer Bransden tip! Just after looking at the pictures for their products it seems to be what is already in my bike... ??? I was told that the bike was in the middle of refurbishment before it was imported to here so it seems somewhat likely it could be. Surely brand new igniton system wouldn't be screwed over so badly in a matter of a few years? I can post up some photos of it all on Monday when I'm back home. Could I be dealing with a messed up motherboard thing? The little epoxy covered box that houses the wires that go to just about everywhere?

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

YES! YES! YES!

I got her firing! The last bastard had the wiring all wrong!
I had a bit of a tinker with all the wires and fixed it up. Now I just have to tune the carbs and correct the ignition timing!

I feel like a pregnant mother feeling her baby kick! :D

In other news, I broke the kick return spring! ;D

Look what came today!

Uhhhhhhh...

Ta da!

Brand new rear-sets. Gotta go to the hardware shop this weekend to pick up some essentials and they should be operational soon!

Other than that, I tried taking her for a spin but I can't seen to get her to fire more than 5 or 6 times a go. That was the best I got. Most other times it only fired once or twice and it took a lot of work to try and start her up. It has also backfired a few times. Ahhhh! I'm getting impatient!

Sounds a lot like timing. Make sure you're firing at the right time on your ignition...that will make a heck of a back fire. I've even had them fire but not run when the coils were reversed. That's a pain!

Cheers mate! I'm going to take it in for a service at a classic bike shop, conveniently a 10 minute walk from my house!

Can anybody with Brit bike experience give me some tips on starting her up properly? I've read to prime her by kicking it over slowly twice and then going all out on the third. Should I be doing this on full throttle, half way or closed? (obviously not FULLY closed but you know what I mean :D)

At the moment I don't have a choke in the carburettors and no filters so there is alot of air getting in.

UPDATE!

Ok, just found I'm only running one piston. Could this be why it's just not starting up fully? My guess is that 1 piston doesn't have enough power to keep it running.
I'm getting new spark plugs tomorrow and I should have it running. I know it's the plugs because I'm getting a spark from both cables.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yep, that's a great start. If the plug doesn't spark, but the wire does, then replace those suckers. That's a good thing, it means your coils are still working well. It can still be timing. Honda's are notorious about running on one cylinder when the timing is screwed up. Beezas are probably the same way. If you can get us a shot of the ignition (where the points usually are, I remember you telling us you have a Boyer Bransden or similar) I can try and help with the timing. If it's electronic and it's installed right, it should still fire even if it's retarded or advanced a little too much. They make life easy given the fact you just rotate the assembly until it smoothes out. You're close man, you have spark at both wires....almost there!

If it's only firing one plug and everything else is OK - like tappets and compression and crabs etc, I'd get a new pair of plugs and plug caps.

OH YES!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

My 1966 BSA A65 Hornet project!

I though I would share this!

HUGE thanks to EVERYBODY who gave my tips on getting the old girl running!

She may be running a wee bit lean but I still need air filters and what-not. A few more weeks to get some essential parts and she'll be purring like a kitten in no time (Or should I say roaring like a lion?).

OK! I really feel like taking her for a spin but the clutch it still pretty sticky and I don't really feel too safe shoving her into 1st. Should I have any problems doing it? My power switch is under my seat if you have a look at the video.

haha! that sounds awesome man

I really like BSA's but don't have that much technical knowledge
I've notified my old man, and he should be signing up soon to help you out
He's owned a BSA rocket 3 and B50 before

hope it hels mate
