The Most Epic CB 500 EVER!

Red Fthr

"Man is born free, and he is everywhere in chains"
I'm sitting in my cubical fantasizing about my CB500 just sitting at home waiting to be played with. As I day dream, I wonder how fast can I make that little love of mine go.

My bike started out completely stock, minus the exhaust.

Today, it looks and feels lost...meaning, I started playing with ideas about a year ago, I've been teetering on that fine line of restoration and alteration.

I've decided just now, like 5 seconds ago that I'm going full alteration/ modernization/ lets get this thing as mean and ballz to the wallz as it can go.

I've fallen in love with the look of vintage land speed bikes. To me it is the ultimate stripped down bare knuckles look and I'm sure it feels the same way too.

You obviously can't comfortably drive a bike around in traffic that is meant only for the slat flats around, so I understand it'll have to be a hybrid of sorts.

I guess I start with asking, how much performance can one possibly put into a CB500?

I leave you with some inspiration (and yes I realize that bike isn't a 500, but damn does that thing not look like it's hauling ass while standing still?)

Terrible bike, terrible build.

If you want a fast cb500, assuming it's a SOHC4, go over to SOHC4.net and look up paulages cb550 build.

You can do the same. Last time he had it dynod was something near 80hp at the rear wheel.

Far as I know, it's had more work since.

Agreed about the pictured bike...it looks like it can only go in one direction and only on a perfectly flat surface.

I'll check out the mentioned build.

Pictured bike is a showpiece with shit tires built to land trendy art school girls. The idea/style is inspired, but the execution is an exercise in uselesness.

That said...

If you really want to emulate the land speed/race style, go for it. Just be smart. It has to function safely on a day to day basis, as well as perform.

Lecture over.

As far as go fast, find a 550 motor. Then find a CB650 cam and a big bore kit (or just a CB650 motor). As stated above, there is a MASSIVE amount of info on SOHC4. There's some great info here as well. Do the research and open the wallet. You can build a real fun machine.

Yeah. I used to rent shop space from Paul.
He's very cool, and makes, as you can see, some very cool shit.

Pauls bike is a real fucking bike, not some cock-assed exercise in "aesthetics".

Oh, the pipeburn article.

Read instead the giant thread of his on sohc4.net.

But I want to land art school chicks AND go fast ;D

Might start a thread on my progress.

Looking forward to hearing of your progress, both on the bike and the girls. :p

I recommend doing a good rebuild on your 500 motor before getting a 550 to go "balls to the wall" with. That way when the zomygawdfast 550+ goes kablewey, you still have a reliable, bitchin' looking bike to ride while you build another. ;)

Am I the only person who wondered what happens when he hits a bump.....

It makes me wince to think how much that might hurt to have a Coker removed from a butt cheek. Maybe the lack of grip is an advantage there. The engineering matches his safety gear quite well though.

If you're talking salt and performance you better stuff a lot into the engine. The class record at Bonneville for Modified Gas is 168.
