THE MYSTERY OF THE POWERBAND? THEY DO NOT EXIST!

Haha, yeah that'd be a laugh! The funniest would be if you made instructions with it and actually sold it to people...

...who then claimed that it worked really well! ;D

You could instruct them to place it around the lid of their airbox, and that the harmonic resonance from the engine reverberated the band and caused a increase in power pulses going into the intake. This effect would be fully realised with an appropriate service from your shop, of course. ;)

First time I ever heard of anyone referring to a powerband as a phsyical object. Sounds like you hang around with some pretty dim people.

LOL, that's why I jokingly asked where he was from.

Maybe his buddies are something like this:

Hahahaha! You are an awesome salesman! The really funny part...they would buy it!

I too have never heard of anyone refer to it as a physical part, or if they did believe it to be one, maybe I just never thought of it as a physical part...anyway, I grew up having dirt bikes and so did my 2 brothers. Most of our bikes were smokers, so I learned what the power band was and understood the term at a relatively early age.

I know what you mean about the where the power comes in at what revs. Never herd of a "Power band" as a part before...

These would be primary belts

Yeah I used to be a salesman in a military disposal and then a pharmacists assistant. You get to learn how to sell things haha... although I really didn't BS people as they were either using the gear to survive/camp with or using it to fix some aspect of their health. I was more than happy to sell them what they wanted, though, if it became apparent that they weren't going to listen to me at all. Like the lady who bought aspirin for a bad toothache instead of something that would actually help. Apparently she "didn't like tablets." Go figure.

Anyway, I reckon the whole powerband thing is centered around people riding a bike that feels like theirs... until it gets into a brilliant, soaring two-stroke powerband. They go to the owner "WHOA! What was that???" and the owner responds "You hit the powerband, man." So now they want a powerband for their bike, but don't realise that the owner is referring to how the engine makes power (ie a lot over a narrow range) and not some sort of mythical part.

My kit would consist of a class with me in a garage and a very sedate bike like a Kawasaki KE100. You then take it apart and explain how the components work - porting, piston position, expansion chamber, etc. Feel free to ask me on the intricacies of these by the way, although I'm sure most people here you know their way around. Anyway, they ride the bike as it is (broad, usable powerband) and then you tune it (early RM80 pipe, larger carburettor, mild porting, advanced timing) and let them ride again. They will know know what a 'powerband' is.

Alternatively, you can leave a bike with a powervalve without the solenoid. The valve will stay in the low-range position and you won't get a soaring topend powerband.

powerband as a part? i love it! ya, i'm amazed at what people DON'T know about the world around them... my favourite was a guy i know who bought a Mazda RX7 Turbo... at some point it was in for servicing and they mentioned the turbo and he was 'huh? i thought 'turbo' was a trim package, you know, like leather and power windows... the turbo model'... he had NO idea what a turbocharger was and that he'd paid extra to get it!

hi
my powerband is green so they must be colour coded, what does it mean?

Thats because it hasn't matured yet. As it develops it will becomes a nice bright fruity color, at which point you will be wow'd

I actually saw a bike on the local craigslist today that made me think of this thread. It was for a Hayabusa or something and the seller said the "powerband was incredible".

a powerband is that thing that married women wear on their finger... with that said, it is indeed, real... it's just not a motorcycle part.
