Hey Guys. A friend and I are creating two bikes over the fall/winter months here in New England. A Yamaha 450 Bobber and a CJ360 Cafe. Should be rolling in the spring time. Figured I'd log our build up on here.
I got the 360 for free in pretty remarkable shape. I have a some stuff on the way already. Benelli 360 tank, clubmans, grips, levers, etc. I'll be running 32mm Mikuni VM slide carbs. Still need to get a seat at this point, but I'm undecided on the shape. Ubiquitous Tarozzi rear sets will go on, and some form of exhaust to replace the meter long muffler on this thing. I'll worry about that after the fact. Not a crazy build up, but we should have 2 fun slow bikes at the end of it 8)
Some slight progress. Parts have started to arrive. Including new points, clubmans, grips, Benelli tank, levers, and carb inlets. I also got some foam pod filters from my buddy since he had 4 on a previous suzuki, now only needs 2 for his bobber.
I machined the controls to allow the wires to exit since the factory bars were machined to allow internal routing of the wiring. There was no way I was getting the wiring to rout through the clubmans due to the angle they're welded at. I cleaned up the cable adjusters and added new hardware.
I can't seem to find what I want in a seat so I think I will end up making one. Due to the width of the Benelli tank it's very difficult to find a seat that will match up seamlessly. I modeled a Dunstall style seat and printed out some templates at a 1:1 ratio to see how it would look and fit. I will probably shorten it up a tiny bit, but see myself making a fiberglass version in the future.
Not a real fan of that seat, but I think it could grow on me, I would have to see it on the bike with that tank! Some sweet projects you have going though.
Cheers
Yep, you don't see too many CJs out there. I agree with using the factory seat and moving it up. I think that would be a nice nod to the model it is, just cause it's not too common.

The Factory CJ seat doesn't do much for me. I appreciate the fact that it would be a nice...tribute?...to the origins of the bike, but I have a roc city seat on the way which I'll cut and modify to fit the Benelli tank better, then will probably build up the dunstall style seat at some point when I feel motivated.
Chad mounted the controls tonight and my shiny NOS fuel cap. This seem to be going alright. I ordered a ton of misc. bits like wheel bearings, fork seals, a new chain, headlight mounting ears, etc. etc.
How did people rebuild bikes before the internet ???
Got the front tank mount fabricated. Fits perfectly and offers some adjustability. After I get the rear tank mount welded on, I'll machine the front one to take some weight out of it.
My RocCity seat showed up yesterday. I need to narrow it up a bit and shorten it, but it's definitely a beautiful piece of work, and for the price you can't beat it. Thanks Sean!
My Italian espresso fits nicely on my Italian tank and gas cap....
After cleaning up the end of the header and cutting the slip joint and heat shield off, I've decided to stay with it and run a supertrapp muffler at an angle on the right side.
Chad decided he wanted to run clubmans on his bobber, so I sold mine to him and have a set of clip-on's on the way. Drag bars in the photos are just to make it easier to move around.
Thanks man-
I had 1 32mm Mikuni that was on my fathers RD400 race bike. I was dead set on using it for my application out of sentimental value. I was digging on E-bay to find another and came across Todd Henning Racing. Guru's on vintage racing, specifically the Honda CB 350's & 450's. I hit them up to see if they could sell me another carb and some jetting to get started with. They mentioned they had a custom cable to adapt the stock throttle to the Mikuni's. It's a really nice piece, with a machined aluminum barrel and plastic slide to adapt one cable into two. The cable was about 50 bucks.

I finished modding my seat so it meets up with the tank better, and I got the carbs and throttle cable hooked up. They're really smooth with the stock throttle assembly.
Thanks for the info about the carbs, thats what I'm going to do to my CJ, after 3 pairs of stockers trying to get non-ripped diaphrams, and getting them to sync and run properly, new carbs are where I'm going. Very little info on converting though.
