The Stache's '76 RD400

Re: '76 RD400c -- 2smoker "Ginger"

Wow thats a nifty little guide. Thanks! Keep an eye out for a PM about those DG pipes, darkhorse.

If DGs are a slight power increase that would be nice!

EDIT:
turning in the air screw helped, significanty. I adjusted it to 1.0 turn, than went from there. I'm currently at .80 turn so I'm going to go up to a 27.5 since it still chugs a tiny bit. Much smooother in deceleration now. Thank youuuu!

Re: '76 RD400c -- 2smoker "Ginger"

I'm having a little trouble with fuel leakage. a little from the left, and the right. The right carb is leaking from the nipple that connects the fuel line to the carb. The nipple is loose on the carb end, keeps popping out. Suggestions for proper glue? The left carb leak is illusive. I believe it's coming from the gasket but when I rebuilt the carbs they looked new. I'm going to replace at first opportunity just to be safe.

Re: '76 RD400c -- 2smoker "Ginger"

When the nipples on my carb came loose I pulled them out coated them in red lock tight, then pressed in and let dry. Always worked for me.

My carb leaked the same way through the gasket. Mine were warped from being over torqued over the years. I tried a new OEM gasket with worse results, went back to the old gasket and tightened in a X pattern about 1/2lb a time till tight and it worked.

Hm. I always tighten in an x-pattern. Maybe i'll be able to get some genuine gaskets. Economycycle.com might have them.
I've never heard of using red lock tight. It doesn't interact with them fuel?

Re: '76 RD400c -- 2smoker "Ginger"

I just know it works for me and was recommended by a trusted two stroke mechanic. Don't think it interacts with the gas just keeps the brass pressed all the way down. You sure it's not coming out of the fuel line? I had fuel leaks with 1/4" (stock size) line and stock clamps. Switched to 3/16" line no clips and no leaks.

Re: '76 RD400c -- 2smoker "Ginger"

It could very well be the hose. I was thinking of swapping the 1/4 to 3/16. This 1/4 is a pain.

Re: '76 RD400c -- 2smoker "Ginger"

Noticed my carbs were wet after a short ride/fill-up tonight. Not sure why... They are wet above the float bowl gaskets. How does fuel go up? Must be something else.

Still need to tweak the design... but thats the general look. perhaps slightly longer, pull it further forward. like this

I dig the low profile seat man.

Thanks. Now I just need to make it happen. I have my resin, just need some glass.

I looked up the original color, Chappy Red. WOW - it's expensive. $80+/pint......I'm not destroying the original paint on the tank, buttt I really don't feel like dropping 80 just to paint my seat..

Re: '76 RD400c -- 2smoker "Ginger"

Looking good stache! You figure out the fuel leaks?

I'm 6' tall and I like the bump of the pad to start right at the shock mount. Gives a little room to slide back and tuck for high speeds.

I know someone who had a body shop match the chappy red and it was spot on.

My carbs are still a little wet. I haven't had a chance to replace the gaskets or the fuel lines. But I'll get on that soon.

She stills chugs a bit at about 1/8th throttle. Here's a little fly-by as an example of what it sounds like.

You can hear it @0:05

It doesn't happen at low speed though:

lovely, I remember the first rd400 I saw, I was on a LC250 and was amazed as it took off beside me wheelstanding in the first 3 gears WOW!!!! Yours looks so clean and original. will watch to see the seat!!

Re: '76 RD400c -- 2smoker "Ginger"

Adjusted the needle seat position to 2nd from the top. Much smoother little to no burble as i climb through the rpms. Still chokes when i let out the throttle while cruising Thoughts?
